Has anyone used any of the cremation only services out there such as Direct Cremation or Only Cremation?

There doesn't seem to be much information or independent reviews regarding these companies or any other.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

You should search for them in Google Maps and see if there are any reviews there. The reviews will be independent, but always take the extreme ones with a pinch of salt.

Didn't realise that these services operated here. I've seen the ads for the UK ones, so it's good to know that they're operating here.

Although I do not know a huge amount about them: There is also Resomation/aquamation in Ireland I believe which is basically cremation without fire. They use water instead. Think they are called pure reflections. Based in Meath I believe.

We used the services of the place in Ringaskiddy, cork.

Top class facility, very peaceful, serene, and very nice facilities.

Both my parents were cremated in a traditional service in Glasnevin, and I can only say good things about it - but what the OP is asking about is something different. These companies (Direct Cremation and Only Cremation) offer a service where the cremation is arranged and performed without any funeral ceremony. They take the body directly from the place of death (no embalming, wake or funeral) straight to the crematorium, then return the cremains to you in an urn. You can then decide to have a ceremony (or not) later.

In a direct cremation, the family don't visit the crematorium at all - the cremation may even be done out-of hours.

There's certainly a growing place for non-religious funerals here.

Not sure about the wisdom of separating them from body disposal though, it removes the reality of death a bit.

Didn't they say the same think about not having a "wake" anymore :) I have at least three childhood memories of having a corpse in the house where I grew up. Not something you can do these days.

My dad and I have been told that when he dies - that the old tradition of a wake might not actually be allowed. Depending on how he dies and a few variables.

My Dad's instructions are clear. He wants a "wake" at home. Like the old three day version. And i know exactly where his ashes have to go.

But the older he gets the more "restrictions" seem to appear on what we can do with him when he is gone :)

A bit of pub waffle maybe, I have been to no shortage of funerals where they were laid out at home. Check out rip.ie and you will see how many.

Yeah we don't take any of that seriusly. We are gonna do what my dad want's to do. But the more he talks about what he wants..... the more we get told we cant do it :)

Like most things - only online do people get annoyed about this kind of thing :)

Other half is a funeral director, be assured there's no rule against bringing a deceased home for a wake, he does it regularly.

Your dad can have his send-off as he wishes.

Yeah exactly. My Dad died in May 2020 from Covid, and we couldn't even enter the property of the funeral home, let alone see him. We had to stand in a public carpark beside it to watch his casket (which had to be solid, not the wicker we wanted) being loaded into the hearse before the funeral, which only 9 people attended (and I had to video record myself to share with the rest of the family).

But I've been at far too many funerals the past 3 years, and all of them have had full West of Ireland wakes at home with absolutely no issue at all. Not 3 days, but certainly more than 24 hours - but I can't see why 3 days would be a problem if you really wanted it. There are no restrictions on it, so I'm not sure what that poster is talking about.

Is it possible to arrange a cremation that doesn't interfere with the post-funeral pub afters?

It's nice to bring mourners to a local pub after the burial to have soup, sandwiches and give them a drink.

Whereas with cremations, the family has to travel to Dublin straight after the church service so that get together doesn't occur.
