Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Two questions re bulbs.....

    1. I have a patch of enormous orange lilies in a raised bed (no idea what they are, I inherited them with the house when I bought) - I now want to stick my compost bin where they are - is it advisable/possible to move them at this time of the year? Can they be kept out of the ground for a couple of weeks while I sort out a new home for them? If so, how should I store them?
    2. What's the best time to plant daffodil bulbs? I want to have them deep in a pot so they come up every year, and I'll plant other bedding on top when they're dormant.

    The orange lilies could be day lilies - which are not actually lilies, but that is a technicality. They are as tough as old boots and you can lift them and store them somewhere where the roots will not dry out. Stand them on a flower bed and put a bit of soil round them to keep them damp. I had a clump sitting around for ages before I got round to planting them and they were fine. Day lilies have what looks like fat roots.

    There is a possibility they are in fact lilies. If you can see a single bulb made up of plump, overlapping scales they are lilies. Will also stand being lifted, just pop them in a large pot while they wait. If a few of the overlapping scales come off, put some compost in a tray and stand the separate scales pointed edge up into the tray and put in a sheltered spot. They will likely produce a new little bulb on each scale. Its a long wait for a flower but a couple of seasons should give you new bulbs.

    Daffodil bulbs should have been planted last september time, though you can get away with it up to December. By this time of year any that were not planted are probably whithered and not worth messing with.
