Engraved labels for plant id

I'm considering a budget laser engraver to print plant labels. But where can I get the acrylic material that will give me the font/background colour contrast of white/black (or vice versa)? Any take a similar approach or have any experience of such a project? Thanks.

A cheap Dymo printer would print onto a flexible plastic roll (like a garden centre plant label).
