Hi done some reseeding last year on some newly purchased field, field is a hill field and there was a drain in the middle which I piped and filled with stone to the top. Got it sown in mid June just before the weather snapped and didn't stop raining since but I was slightly disappointed that the field began boiling in a few spots right beside the closed drain

Pictures where taken after this field was cut in silage. There is a few spots all the way across the field just above the closed drain. Anyone seen anything like this before? U'd imagine its so close to the shore it would just drain that direction? What would cause this old stone shores? or just water coming out at the butt of the hill? What's best to do mole plough it? or small stone drains?

You were out early this morning! I have seen similar and we just put another short drain through it in to the drain and haven’t had a bother since. Done in 2010.

Would there be springs there by any chance, I have a similar problem, planning to run a land drain away from when the long dry days come.

I've had the same also. A lot of clay in my ground and it seems to boil up every now and again. Latest one is in a corner about 5 metres from one open drain and maybe 10 from another. I usually just run a short drain from them and they disappear.

Night shift its great to get the admin stuff out of the way 😂 Suppose it wouldn't take too much stone as it's very close and prob no need for a pipe.

I'm not sure I was thinking maybe the water was moving through rock or gravel in the hill and as the hill ran out the water comes up I don't no that to be correct just an amateurs guess suppose they would be a form of spring

Must be similar a lot of clay in this field also. Do you use a pipe or just stone on them short runs?

Probably as well to run a pipe. Belt and braces like.

Our land would be alot of clay and shale patches. In some places if you don’t hit a spring exactly with a drain then it boils up like that. It’s frustrating. You’d think it would drain a meter into the shore beside it rather than boil up to the surface 🙄

It will only be a short run anyway so a 4inch single wall pipe will move a lot of stuff

Hi, looking for advice on dealing with possible soil compaction, apologies if wrong forum thread. We had to dig a lot of fill out when building our house in County Galway. It was quite a stoney/gravelly type fill and instead of removing it off site we stripped the topsoil off a 1/2 acre paddock beside the house, spread out the fill over the stripped area and then put the topsoil back over this. I then reseeded the grass last July. The paddock has not being draining well at all since this and it is impossible to let even sheep graze on it. The soil is like soup on the surface. Could it be compacted by the 15 tonne excavator used to spread the fill and topsoil? Or would this poor drainage be normal in a newly reseeded grassland and just needs time to settle and eatablish? Thanks for any advice.

Just needs time, wait till summer and get someone with mole plough or subsoiler to pull shallow drains through it
