Very similar for me too, not a flake of snow all winter and very little frost. Spring isn't much better either outside of last weekend which was lovely.

La Niña is developing now. Next winter will be a La Niña one. Hopefully a better winter then last.

GFS Warm in the NW on Friday

Temperatures increase for most on Saturday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,341 ✭✭✭emo72

What does that mean? Good as in warm mild? Or good as in freezing chaotic weather?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,082 ✭✭✭irelandspurs

What's it looking like for Saturday? Our babies christening is Saturday, so hoping for a dry day at least 🤞

Next weekend is not locked in right now. Could be sunny and warm but also could be average with a wet weekend, all to play for.

GFS 6z has a dartboard low into south-west UK which keeps us rather cloudy and showery and not much in the way of warm weather. We will need a few more days to see what's in store for next weekend. Hopefully this 6z is a bit of an outlier for next weekend.

Overall the GFS shows a warming trend after the rather chilly second half of April compared to the first half which was very mild. The trend is to stay unsettled but not overly so and perhaps signs of a drying trend as we push towards the middle of May.

This app is quite handy for seeing the weather some days out. Looks like it will be pretty dry in Sligo after Tuesday. Was sunny all day yesterday and sunny again today. Showers in the afternoon though.

Very cold air moving down towards Spain into early May…and straight away we start to get unusual weather with heat coming in from the north east…expect waves of heat to come north like last time into the second week of May…charts are going to change alot for the second week of May…

But which kind of weather will we end up with…less chance of our usual weather anyway..anytime Spain gets our usual cold and wet weather we end up getting good weather more often than not…so hopefully Spain and the rest of europe get bad weather because its the only time we get good weather🤣

12z has followed the 6z. BH weekend will be a washout if it's correct.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,082 ✭✭✭irelandspurs

Thanks, dry is all we need so fingers crossed we get dry weather in Meath for Saturday.

Any update to the charts, any warmth, sun….anything remotely summer like

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,541 ✭✭✭PokeHerKing

Not really, this week and BH weekend looks wet.

A weak HP builds after the BH bringing some dry weather for a few days but another LP appears for the weekend.

It's only start of May though so summer weather is still a bit fanciful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,111 ✭✭✭KanyeSouthEast

is even Spring weather a bit fanciful?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,337 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

ECM trending towards HP we move through midweek, not without rain but drier and warmer, currently showing getting into the high teens or 20C.

GFS similar getting milder, out to the end of the weekend anyway.

GEM similar and warmer, ACCESS-G similar and warm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,528 ✭✭✭Hooter23

We are right in between the cold air to the south and warm air to the north..so that means cloud and rain for most…the warmer air arriving from the south next wednesday onwards for a few days anyway…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,064 ✭✭✭Chris_5339762

Yay for 20c and outrageous humidity!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,912 ✭✭✭sparrowcar

Hmmm warm rain... that time if the year where you don't know what to wear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,384 ✭✭✭highdef

I'd rather it at 25°+ with the humidity (plus calm conditions) but when it gets closer to or above 30°, I admit that humidity above about 70% can be heading towards unpleasant territory. On the upside, those conditions are often ripe for fantastic visually and aurally stunning thunderstorms.

Nothing of the sort in the FI charts at the moment but GFS is suggesting temperatures in some parts of the country getting close to 20° from Wednesday to Sunday of next week so I'd say 20° will be exceeded.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,111 ✭✭✭KanyeSouthEast

is that with sunshine high def or wet?

There won't be wall to wall sunshine but some sunshine at times, a bit too far out at this stage to get into specifics of cloud cover but winds will be often fairly light so I'd imagine it will be feeling quite nice. Probably lovely weather for the likes of walking, cycling, gardening and that sort of thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,111 ✭✭✭KanyeSouthEast

    thanks appreciate the reply

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,300 ✭✭✭pauldry

Next Wednesday for about 5 or 6 days the weather will be very good. 18c to 22c possible I'd say.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,337 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Models definitely locking on to the much drier trend for next week, could stay dry for most for much of the week going by the latest runs from later Monday out to maybe Sunday or so, getting up to the high teens from Weds, nudging up towards the weekend over 20C. Uncertain after that. That deepening area of LP on the end of the run , hmmm…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,528 ✭✭✭Hooter23

Its May but it still looks like winter under that cloud same as last year…more chance of sun tomorrow onwards…then warm summer weather coming up from the south from next Wednesday/Thursday…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,280 ✭✭✭Sammy2012

What are the long term charts showing for the rest of May?

Looks like getting into the high teens or over 20c in a few parts for the coming weekend maybe the mid teens or high teens in parts out to the end of the run but currently looking a bit more unsettled from next weekend ( more so from the GFS ), current runs not showing the deep LP that was appearing earlier , LP might be more dominant towards the end of the run but not too deep for now, the scenario on the current charts could be mild and humid and thundery at the end of the run but a lot could change by then, just picking a point to see if it keeps showing up.

Overall rainfall totals look low in general, HP doing a good job of blocking much of the weather out until next weekend, could get showery then and possibly some more organised bands into the following week. Fog and sea fog might be in the forecasts as the week goes on. Have noticed lately the models producing less rain than would be initially forecast, hopefully that will continue.

It does look like the cold air we usually get will be heading down towards Spain into next Monday…if this weather pattern continues we could get a very different summer than usual…probably more like they get in the rest of europe warm/hot…

Possible High pressure setting up to the east pulling in warm continental air by mid May…this can bring prolonged summer weather like we used to get in the past..

I think I’d take it to be fairly unsettled up to midsummer and take a chance on a decent July and August. Seen enough dry Mays and Junes in recent years.
I hope this pattern happens for a few weeks, still six weeks to midsummer so nothing to worry about even if it does happen.

Have Communion Saturday week. Can anyone tell me what are the charts looking like at the moment?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,300 ✭✭✭pauldry

Hard to say but more High Pressure nearby than low. Also a weak jetstream at present which is good. Have a confirmation in 2 weeks and the same as you I'm looking. Some runs show High Pressure a few others show low. Maybe 60/40 at present for good weather.

The cold air we usually get is now changing track it is now going to France and central europe instead of Spain...so France and Spain will get the bad weather Spain got..chance we will get good weather from this around the start of June..but this pattern is different and we might get prolonged warm weather from it in June

So sorry but what weather are you expecting Spain to get???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,384 ✭✭✭highdef

The long range/seasonal forecast from Met Eireann does not look the worst, by any means:

"SEASONAL OUTLOOK FOR JUNE, JULY AND AUGUST 2024 (JJA)

The signal from the C3S seasonal models for Ireland during the JJA period is for above average temperatures and close to average rainfall overall.

Mean temperatures during JJA are signalled to be above average, with all three months expected to trend between 0.5 and 1.0°C above normal.

The rainfall forecast is less certain, with June having a higher likelihood of wetter than average conditions while July and August have the higher potential for drier spells at times.

The sea surface temperatures around Irish coasts and over the Atlantic are expected to continue above average during JJA, trending 0.2 to 1.0°C degrees higher than normal generally, with the highest anomalies expected to the south of Ireland and in the Irish Sea."

That's very similar to Gavs Weather summer prediction as well. June being the most unsettled and a better chance of warmer and drier weather in July and particularly August. Overall mixed and slightly warmer than average and unlikely to be a deluge ridden soakfest like last summer.

We will get around 4 warm days out of this from Friday to Monday might start to change again on tuesday...we are getting 2 - 5 warm sunny days since the cold weather pattern started to go to Spain/France in May...if this weather pattern continues in June we might start to get more prolonged warm weather out of it as it will be summer by then… When Spain/France get the bad weather there usually is a delay of about a week before we start to get warm sunny weather....this is what happens in May this weather pattern happening in June/July could bring us different weather than it did in May though...we might have to use a different method to forecast for June July and August
