Earth sleeving in old cable

Was sorting out what cables I have in the shed as want to add a socket. I have some new 2.5mmsquare to do it but notice it is bigger than the existing cabling to the socket I'll be spurring off. Then I realised the size difference is probably because there is no earth sleeving. The earths in the socket are just tangled together and then put in the earth terminal on the socket, with another bit going into the metal backbox.

Got a bit of a shock when I saw it because compared to the white 2.5T+E, it looks more like 1.5mmT+E.

Cable usually has writing on it to say what gauge it is. The earth should be sleeved too, not bare.

It will be embossed on the cable at 1m increments along with the BS standard. Be sure to check that.

That was the first thing I checked, but there's no indication of size, just says Basec 201:2001 iso something or other

That will be the approval cert with BASEC. Have a Google of the complete numbers, rare that it wouldn't come up.

The earth conductor is now also 2.5 and will also have sleeving in the new cable. This is why it’s physically bigger than the grey cable

The earth would be 1.5mm on the old, hopefully the brown and blue are 2.5mm2

Yes that looks right. As another poster said it is because before the earth cable was unsleeved and only 1.5mmsq but now in New cables it is sleeved and 2.5mmsq.
