Offer to buy neighbours car

Its in a sad state just sitting up the last month or two. So I offered to buy it off them yesterday thought maybe they might sell I for a grand or 2 thinking maybe that's all it would be worth. But hey this is Ireland so looking up online it would be more like 5 grand at least.

I do not blame them for wanting to get as much as they can for it. If it was my car I would do the same.

Anyway they have not got back to me and I am having second thoughts. On one hand I have a charging point outside and if it was in my driveway it could be charging but will still not get driven much as I have yet to pass my driving test. Maybe it's best I just let them sell it elsewhere.

I kind of want to drive a manual car for a few years first and then go electric as well. Just to have the experience.

What do people in here think?

Manual is dying, most cars you buy now are electric or hybrid so automatic. Even new tractors in the majority are auto

The requirement for manual for the average person is really going to be gone soon, especially with car companies trying to reduce models and the US only buy autos

Don't bother with manual. It's not a survival skill, it's a waste of time for anyone starting to drive now. It's also a chore to drive a manual unless you are in a high performance drivers car. For 99% of people, an auto box is all you'll ever need. The single and only benefit I can think of being able to drive a manual is when renting a car in a country where manual is very much the norm, an autobox can be more expensive to rent.

The number of manuals will die and rental companies buy new mostly. So they will be forced to move towards auto as well.

I think the best case is my Dad who hated auto's. Mostly because he drove an auto many years ago, but once he moved into a modern auto he won't move back. He works on a farm and still has manual tractors but for a car auto now for last couple of cars.

I never said I did not want it. I know my neighbour well and know they look after their cars well. So if I bought it I know it has not been in a crash for instance.

However I agree with some posters below that driving a manual is a life skill and a good one to have.

The other thing is I have my electric Trike which is perfect for around town but not really suitable for going further. I would like to keep that too.

How do learner drivers cope? is it easy to get a classes and a test with an automatic car/electric car? Is there waiting list for a test in an EV the same as petrol?

It does not matter what car you’re driving the waiting list for a driving test doesn’t change. You can do your test in a manual or automatic, but of course if an auto you can’t drive manual without passing the test in one (pass in manual you can drive both).

Good few ADI’s that have automatic cars in my experience. I went manual since it’s the most common type of car in Ireland at the minute to suggest it’s “going Away” is ridiculous as most learners don’t spend big bucks for brand new cars.

It might in a few years be the case manufacturers stop making manuals but how many more years will it take before it affects the supply in the market? Like if Ford for example decided no more manuals the fiesta, focus, transits etc from 1990’s-present don’t vanish 🤣

It’s also a bit over the top at the least to say learning manual is a “survival skill” what are you expecting to be locked up and the only way out of your prison is shift gears correctly 🤣

I havent owned a manual in over 10 years but I use work vans quite a bit when I am doing anything in the house, they are all manuals and will be for a long time to come. My dads campervan is manual too which I have taken once or twice.

You can get auto but they are very rare.

If I was learning today and I knew what I know now I would be learning manual 100%, its not difficult really millions of irish people have mastered it and billions around the world probably. Then just jump in an auto and you can drive whatever you want then.

As others have said, manual is no longer a priority or a survival skill. Sure, if there's a zombie apocalypse and you're stuck trying to get the last working car you found (which is a manual) into gear to try and get away from a horde, that could be a problem.

But the reality is that autos are becoming cheaper to source, especially in an EV context. Choosing auto won't be the major price deterrent for you that it would have been for some of us older folk when we were starting out.

If you're adamant you need manual skills, then by all means take the lessons and driving test in a manual. Having driven manual all my life and just after moving to auto in an EV, I can't see myself going back, but it's nice to have it on the license.

If you ever fancy owning or renting a classic car, with the exception US metal or most old Mercs, they will be manual.

My teenage kids have already said they'd learn manual for this reason, but we like the older stuff in our house.

I wouldn't bother getting my test in a manual today unless there was a particular car I really wanted

There's many more automatics and EVs around today and manufacturers are steadily retiring the number of manual models they sell

I know one or two people who are learning in EVs and have no intention of ever driving a manual

Also it's worth remembering there's no rule saying you can't pass your test in an automatic now and later do the test in a manual to remove the restriction:

Fecking getting my IBT done. Not my fault its there's because I should have had it done the last weekend I was at it except for the battery went on the scooter I was on and the he said he needs to change the rear brake caliper on it too. He has been getting it hard to get one for the scooter. Hopefully soon.

I do have some. I have over 800kms worth and 22 hours of driving with a driving instructor 12 this year and 10 in 1997 lol as well as many hours doing IBT but that's not on the roads not yet anyway.

Of course it won't happen immediately but the number of people moving to auto's now and doing auto only licenses is growing

As I said buy a new car now and majority are electric/hybrd which are auto. Fast forward 5-10 years and that will swap.

As I said manual is dying, in reality it should have died away 10 years ago

But in real reality there will be manuals on the road for the next 20 years or more. My sister bought a 241 manual this week, wouldn't be my choice at all (car or gearbox she picked) but she bought it and so are thousands of others.

For real driving such as doing track work etc, yes you can't beat a good driver in a manual for control. Dual clutch autos in manual mode are just as good as manual though given how they react.

Older autos that hold a high gear into corner really are terrible in terms of car control.
