The reason ticket’s are expensive for professional sports is because players get paid.
Gaa players dont. Not going down rabbitt holes with you. If you can afford it, fair play to you.

But Imo it’s a needless price increase at a time when everything is already very expensive.

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,065 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Cost of opening Croke Park and cost of all the things the GAA pay for across the country has gone up too.

The vast vast majority can afford it so don't pretend this is about being being some rich kid or something.

You can still got to an All Ireland final for 60e and that's great value.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,676 ✭✭✭thinkabouit

whatever lad, i dont buy that crap at all.
They wouldn’t be losing money even if they kept the price to €90

One thing the Gaa aint short of is money.
There going to make an absolute fortune from the Gigs & finals.

It’s greed greed & more greed.
In a few years it’ll be how much €€€ for a ticket, where does it end?

I've no issue whatsoever with the €100 - for an All Ireland Final I still think it's great value. I 100% agree though that it's complete madness that the cost of tickets, as said above, is the same for every stand seat in the stadium unlike nearly every other event. It wouldn't take a lot of effort to put in different categories/bands of tickets and prices.

The winners of the JMD should have a playoff against the bottom team in Leinster to determine who stays in Leinster the following year. It's of no use to them getting a tanking from Wexford or Cork and it's not fair on the bottom team in Leinster (Carlow in this case) to be relegated immediately having put in a serious year losing out on a dubious refereeing decision.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,626 ✭✭✭bren2001

Id disagree with that. There’s two weak teams in the group and that’s the real play off. Winning the JMD has to actually have a reward, not a potential reward.

Would you be happy if the cheap seats were 100 and then more expensive ones 150? I'd imagine it's as likely to happen as tiered pricing reducing the cost of stand tickets?

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,065 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Well with these current increases I would rather they charges some 110e and left some at 90. They could even go higher and reduce some to 70/80.

End of the day it's the 2nd increase in 14 years so it's not unreasonable. Especially in a country where most people are happy to pay 100e for a Man United jersey or a concert or even more to see a match in England. 100 or 55 is not extortionate these days in a country full of 2 cars a house, flat screen TVs and Sky boxes even in the poor parts of town.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,626 ✭✭✭bren2001

I mean, it’s kind of a separate point isn’t it?

You’re talking about if the GAA brought it in, they’d likely set it up to charge even more. Probably.

What people are really discussing is that you buy tickets for the AI final and the guy who gets the last row in the corner of the upper canal pays the same price as someone on the halfway line in the lower Hogan. They’re wildly different experiences and it’s reasonable to expect one to be cheaper. Do you disagree with that?

Well, I do agree the point you both are making does make sense. You pay more for a better experience, and subsidise the seat of another.

But in practice, given what we've seen with GAAGo and the changes this year to the season ticket structure, I'm inclined to think tiered pricing would just lead to more expensive tickets for everyone. They are looking for anyway to increase revenue they can.

Separately, there was a group discount for clubs of 15 euro tickets for all ireland quarter and semi finals pre covid. Is there anything like this still available or discontinued completely?

Not Senior, but I'm delighted Offaly won the U20 tonight by 6 points.

Great game and the better team definitely won.

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,065 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Love what's going on behind the scenes there. Good to see after years wasted feeling sorry for themselves.

After the heartbreak to Tipp minors couple years ago and also tasting defeat to Cork in U20 final last year it must be so fulfilling for Offaly to finally get over the line. Years of hard work with development squads and nurturing teams up along the different age groups and tonight is the reward. I think there's quite a few underage for next year, also (same for Tipp). This Offaly bunch seem destined for bigger things but that's for another time. Tonight belongs to Offaly. The Offaly Rover will be belted out from Birr to Coolderry tonight. Well done to them they bring great colour and noise.

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,065 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Good to hear the manager talk about the important thing is to have another top underage team come up behind this one.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,132 ✭✭✭riddles

How would the first yellow card be issued against Offaly and penalty plus first tipp v a yellow card and free against. Nonsense level of officiating in GAA

Good quality strength and conditioning in place will be key for Offaly now at a senior level to get those young lads competing in a few years time at the top senior level.

They will continue to trail behind otherwise.

a really talented bunch of players, they have conceded size and strength to every opponent throughout this years campaign but their massive work rate, pace and silken skills got them to the promised land, in full flow they are a sheer joy to watch

Looked like a brilliant atmosphere at it, great win for them

screaney reminds me of no one but tony kelly his style and belief in his play is unlimited , where i was very impressed with offaly tonight was not the forwards but ruari kelly and ben miller look really really good defenders conor bourke was good too

they do really need to bulk up they wont get away with that game plan at senior level at that size but they are some team to hunt in packs and chase a team down and put them under pressure

i would be very critical of brendan cumins's tactics , allowing offaly all the short puckouts in the world was no help and playing lads like cathal english , darragh mccarthy and oisin o donohue so deep was a serious help to offaly tonight

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,166 ✭✭✭threeball

Yes but unfortunately as many have found down through the years, skill isn't enough at senior. They're quite a light bunch and I hope they haven't left it too late with the S&C because senior is a different ball game. You're meeting some of the best hurlers to come out of the last 10 u20 teams plus others who have emerged from clubs late and most are built like tanks. Very easy to get eaten up at that level regardless of skill levels.

saw a great stat on Offaly last night, only the 3rd county after Cork and Galway to win Senior, U20/21 and Minor in both codes. some going given their population.

Dublin missing the u20/21 hurling, Tipperary missing the u20/21 football I think

Cost of opening Croke Park for Dublin at every possible opportunity, and then the place 1/2 / 1/4 full is whats costing the most … not when its full …….

And the gigs that are held there must make th GAA a few quid too…
But yeh, lets hammer the supporters….

Well theres a few things on that

    (i) No I dont think most people are happy to pay that for a Man Utd jersey, I'd say very few actually do. They might buy a jersey for their kid for Christmas, thats as far as it goes.

(ii) Concerts - yeah its a fair point. They are pricey. But still though, its not the same thing. Also, the price of concerts has gone up dramatically because artists no longer make money from record sales; same argument cant be made for GAA.

(iii) point is well made elsewhere as to why is there standard pricing right around the stadium when some seats way better than others. I'd say thats to do with how tickets are allocated - they are dividing them up between 2000+ clubs around the country; dont want one club saying why are we getting the cheap tickets and the lads down the road getting the expensive tickets. I wouldnt personally go to any game if the ticket was up at the back of the Cusack upper stand. I've done it a few times, you'd need binoculars.

(iv) for the money, its a hell of a pity they dont have the Minor game on the same day any more; that was a big part of the day.

    (v) I dont have a major issue with the AI Final price. But I do think €40 is to much for provincial finals and will keep a lot of neutrals away, especially in Leinster. The quarter full Croke Park is becoming a big deterrent in its own right; and they need to be filling it as a priority over revenue.

Dublin in the Leinster Final for second time in 10 years, and they are nowhere near selling out even the lower tier in Croke Park - with the huge level of engagement at Club level in Dublin, the tens of thousands of kids playing the game now, they should be getting 60/70'000 for this game.

But they dont sell Family tickets, and they dont sell kids tickets for the Hogan Stand.

You are probably right on no.3 being the reason for not having banding. I think the thing of every club getting tickets should be massively reformed anyway but that's a conversation not fit for "2024 championship" threads.

Dublin haven't been filling Parnell so I don't think there is much hope of them bringing a huge crowd and that's fair enough. If they suddenly brought 60k everyone would just slag them as bandwagoners. No family ticket is because juvenile is 8e which is an good price for a sports event and I think better than set tickets with 2+4 or something like that.

Will be interesting to see what Offaly bring. Can't understand why they empty the county for u20 but stick their noses up at Joe McD.
