Charging stations

Hi All

I will need to use a charging station next week for Model Y Tesla. This is the first time we be doing this.

On the ESB site i see three different types, dc chademo, ccs combo and type 2.

Is type 2 the only one that works for the tesla?

Tesla Model Y/3 and all modern ev's in Europe are CCS / CCS Combo for DC (fast charging), type 2 for AC (slow charging).

Any CCS or type 2 (slow) will work with Tesla

CCS is typically 7+ times faster than type 2. Filter maps by CCS to see where to go. I like plugshare app as it shows the most charge points and a lot of non esb ones. Note you may need different apps to activate different brands of chargers.

Where are you going? Easiest is to use the supercharger network. Just plug your car in and charging starts immediately and bills your credit card in your account.

Check the route on your phone app or in the car and it will include charging stops automatically (Tesla chargers only), you can remove them if it's a massive detour and manually add Ecars, Ionity etc instead if you need to.

Another option is abetterrouteplanner app or website, change car type to yours and select CCS as well as Tesla CCS for charger types. Put in full return trip.

It still beggars belief how many people don't do their research before splashing 40k+ on an electric car.

Tesla Model 3 and Y cars use Type 2 for AC charging and CCS for DC charging. Don't use the tethered Type 2 if there's a CCS available

Heading to Wexford, the car will get us down no problem, just we be down for the week and will be heading into the town.

No Tesla chargers in the town, but some ESB type 2/CCS ones, so we can park up and charge while getting some stuff in the town.

Have a back up plan, just in case others have the same idea.

Also create an ECars account before you get there. I once waited 15 minutes for someone at the charger to start charging who told me it was taking them so long as they were struggling to register a new account…. You’ll need to have an account and the ECars app to start and stop charging.
Keep an eye on the clock - ECars hits you with an €8 overstay fee if you are charging on DC for more than 45 minutes.
