Rump bar for water trough - gap?

How much of a gap is needed from edge of water trough to rump bar to prevent or minimise dung entering?

Have a trough with protection pipe around it which shields the trough from rubbing damage. As it is tight to the drinker they are able to dung into it.

In the summer season I'd like to cut and expand it to offer some protection.

Could put an old trailer tyre on the ground beside the drinker, once the touch it with the back foot they’ll not go back further

We have water troughs with protective bars too, put pier caps on the floor either side below the troughs. They won't back up onto a height. That works here, the older pier caps were chunkier that the modern ones.

I've got the piping structure already around it. Plenty of time and additional piping so was going to cut and fill out to a suitable spacing.

The danger with moving out the bar to leave a space is that an animal jumping in the pen could get a front leg wedged in the gap. A 4” high concrete step under it is a safer solution. You can put a good slope on it to minimise dung collecting there

I've got the condon drinkers with rump bar and didn't like that gap , so I welded a plate to fill .
