The double elimination format that is expected to be agreed will more or less mean one round instead of two to get to this weekend's scenario. That format will also allow for a weekend off after the league finals. It should be the right move.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,444 ✭✭✭legendary.xix

The drawback of the current format is two uneventful rounds to get this great final round. The double elimination format will take one less round to get to this weekend's drama. It should be a decent improvement.

Galway, Mayo, Cork and Monaghan the biggest losers of the weekend from the teams still in the championship.

Far too much is being made of the need for a break after the League Finals. It has the potential to have eight teams affected (championship games weekend after League Final), but in reality it was only three in 2023. Wicklow and Sligo managed to overcome the "disadvantage", and only Mayo failed in the first round of the Provincials. After a bit of a campaign to rewrite the calendar to suit Mayo.

Only Leitrim was affected this year, with zero in the way of a campaign on their behalf.

Forget League finals. Team with most points wins the league. Cuts out a nonsense final

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,444 ✭✭✭legendary.xix

The counties say no! They want the league finals retained. People give out about Dublin's Croke Park advantage. The league finals gives 8 counties game time in Croke Park.

So Monaghan are struggling, yet Meath are so abject, they made them look like world beaters. Monaghan could even afford to win pulling up and taking their foot off the gas.

This has to be up there with Meaths lowest point. To limp out of the championship after the campaign they had is nothing short of embarrassing. There's simply no excuses for how appallingly bad they are.

They have a bit of money there, are one of the "stronger" counties, why can't they simply go out and attract a manager like Mickey Harte or Jim McGuinness. Not now obviously, but these guys were free before, why on earth weren't Meant onto them? To bring structure and intensity back into the county if nothing else?

This "5 year plan" stuff, and "takes a few years to develop these young players" is nothing but waffle. A manager like Harte would of had them far better drilled if he was there the last two years, Louth didn't need all this "5 year plan" rubbish to improve.

From what I've heard from those who spoke to players, Colm tells them they're "competitive for their level". If that's what the player are told, and that's their ambition, Meath should simply forget about it.

Phrases like shambolic, appalling and brutal simply don't do justice to how bad Meath are. Simply no excuse to be that bad

This particular doesn't show they are beatable as they weren't beaten. In a general sense, they are beatable in individual games though. It does show they struggle more away from home than in their home stadium though. Mayo will be disappointed not to have won having been a point up with so little time left.

The British Louth supporters club must have been in attendance today.

Definitely heard chants of "red aw-mae" from the crowd.

The whole concept is a joke when you have a team that hasn't lost a game and a team that lost 3 going into the same draw tomorrow and the only thing that separates them is home advantage.

There's just no way forward where the provincials are part of the main championship. Any tinkering around it is akin to putting lipstick on a pig. It'll never have a decent outcome with the provincials in the equation.

That Fenton tackle on ROD was a definite foul, balances out the 45 (dunno how the umpire missed that)

Massive result for Armagh, coming back like that will give them a huge amount of confidence

Mayo will be disappointed not to have won being a point up , but the 45 , wasn't a 45 in fairness, every team struggles more away from home , what is obvious here is , the only problem you have is once again Dublin !! you never comment on any other County , your Anti Dublin agenda is carrying on into this thread from the dominance of Dublin thread , pathetic stuff really.

I would be inclined to go with it being a lot to do with McGeeney. They are a team that physically strong team that when the shackles are off are a strong running team that when doing so can cause serious problem even to blanket defences. I thought they were poor enough today, and it took a fortuitous goal to get them the draw, but they still topped a group, that on paper at least, was the toughest of the four. Galway will be a handfull for anyone, but I cannot see them going the whole way without the wrecking ball of Comer.

For all the abuse that is heaped on the Ulster Championship the two finalist are into the QFs

Have you not seen Meath at any stage in the last 15 years? How is today any worse?

The tackle against Fenton on 66 minutes where the mayo lad was practically piggybacking Fenton was the worst of the lot. Worst thing about it was that it was right in front of the ref. Clear as day, the whole time.

I can understand some of the other muck from the ref like the false 45 or even the softest free you will see this year that nearly won the game for mayo but that was just terrible.

    Mayo v Derry

    Cork v Louth

    Tyrone v Roscommon

    Galway v Monaghan

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,926 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Louth are at home. But will not be playing in Louth. Inniskeen or Navan? The Committee might have some input.

    "Preliminary Quarter-Finals
    22-23.06.2024 (Sat/Sun)
The four second-placed teams from Round 1 (Group Stage) shall be drawn to play at home
against the four third-placed teams, subject in the first instance to the avoidance of repeat
Provincial Final pairings and where possible repeat pairings from Round 1.
Home Venues shall be subject to approval by the Central Competitions Control Committee
and shall meet the criteria set down by the National Facilities/Health and Safety Committee."

    "Quarter-Finals
    29-30.06.2024 (Sat/Sun)
The four first-place teams from Round 1 (Group Stage) shall be drawn to play against the
four Preliminary Quarter-Finals winners, subject in the first instance to the avoidance of
repeat Provincial Final pairings and where possible repeat pairings from Round 1 (Group
    Stage)."

Jumping ahead, likely winners Mayo, Tyrone and Galway. Louth/Cork I wouldn't call. Avoiding repeat pairings with Donegal, Dublin , Armagh and Kerry would rule out Galway v Mayo and Dublin v Mayo ??. Also Donegal v Tyrone and Donegal v Cork ??.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,226 ✭✭✭gaffer91

I agree the current format is bad but they seem determined to keep the Provincials and keep them a part of the All-Ireland. I don't agree with this given how uncompetitive they have become, Leinster in particular being by far the worst, but this seems to be the GAA's position. So if we're not moving to an open draw or another model, then they should move back to the 2001 to 2017 format. It wasn't perfect but seemed to strike a reasonable balance in terms of number of games, risk from losing etc. What's come since has been worse and supporters don't seem to be invested in it. Obviously there are other, far bigger issues for Gaelic Football as well but that would be one small change that would have pretty clear benefits.

Galway v Mayo would not happen anyway as it's Group winners v preliminary winners in the quarter finals.

It cannot be preliminary winners v preliminary winners.

The Masters in golf has Amen Corner. Round 3, Pre-QFs and QFs are the Amen Corner in Gaelic football. Upto 16 gets cut to 12, then 8 and finally 4 are left standing at the end of these 3 weekends.

On form Mayo should win that, but if Derry revert to the type of play where they we getting to league finals might be a different story.

Cork v Louth - I would say Louth have the winning of this all the players know their roles, Well drilled and Mulroy can win a game on his own.

Tyrone v the Rossies - I think Tyrone will win this one handy enough.

Galway v Monaghan - you would expect a Galway reaction. Monaghan could be in for a long day.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,167 ✭✭✭munsterlegend

Mayo you just never know but Derry have regressed in recent weeks.

I thought Tyrone looked very slick in attack v Cork but the black card was crucial in them building a gap and Cork were naive not to completely slow it down.

Louth v Cork is very 50/50. Both will think they will win. Hurley being fit for Cork could be the deciding factor but a hamstring injury is always a recurring problem. O Mahony back for Cork would be a big plus.

Galway should dispose of Monaghan with a bit to spare going on recent fom.

    Cork 4/7 Louth 15/8

    Galway 2/7 Monaghan 7/2

    Mayo 4/6 Derry 13/8

    Tyrone 2/5 Cavan Roscommon 5/2

All the Pre-QFs are on GAAGO. Will they spread them out over Saturday and Sunday?

Yes, they will probably spread them out.

Last season Galway v Mayo was on RTE.

I can't remember if it was originally scheduled for GAA Go and then switched to RTE or whether RTE always had a choice of one game.
