Just an FYI OP. I use to work for a marketplace company. 15 engineers were employed and it was nothing special. Salaries between 40-100K.

OP your idea of what extortion is needs a reality check

But what you appear to be asking for a fully functioning website, the number of users and averts is not really relevant?

paying someone €1,000 a week to have them work part time on my website on top of other websites theyre developing is a bit over the top to say the least .

I'll just be straight with you. You haven't a clue. You're making yourself out to be at best naive and at worst utterly ignorant and insulting.

If you're looking at €8,500 over say six weeks, it would break down to roughly 15-18 hours per week based on a fairly conservative hourly rate - assuming my maths are correct.

If you're getting a freelance developer to committ to that amount of time per week, on fairly short notice, then that is in no way unreasonable.

Granted you may not want to pay it or see the value in it, but that's not the Dev's problem.

I'm sure you have done but sit down and have a think about the value and importance of your demo. How important is this? Could it make or break your project? Is this really the time to be cutting corners?

If it's a success then you could be looking back at the €8,500 in a few years and thinking what a bargain you got.

EDIT - My numbers are off! I think(!) it's actually worse for the dev.

What did freelancers on fiverr quote you? That is the absolute best your going to get. I've seen some ridiculously cheap good quality work on there

Why not use Figma and produce a prototype if all you need is a demo?

In need of more than a website!

If you paid me 8500 euro to build that for you I'd certainly be the one losing out..

Your attitude is the reason you have t found somebody to build it for you yet.

And if you find somebody to do it for you for a reasonable price, it won't end well.

You think you should get someone's skills and creative product on the cheap because they have another job?

plot twist, i got someone to do it for a far cheaper price and someone local that I can actually meet with and specify what I need, so it just goes to prove that you tech lads and website builders are basically extorting people as I already knew anyway . And this guy actually runs a business doing this, its not just some freelancer, so proves my point. wind your necks in lads

Probably got some lad who runs a phone repair shop to do it for cheap.

Can we have a look at the finished result?

Make sure to get someone independent to pen test it for you before you go live, that costs money too.

Thanks for reporting back. I don't doubt that you found someone to do this cheaper.

For me it illustrates that people considering a career in software development should really reconsider. I'd never recommend software development as a career. Fine to do it as a hobby. There are far, far easier and more lucrative paths to follow.

In the last year I'm increasing using AI to write code, and I know it's only a matter of time when my own job is completely gone. I'm relatively lucky in that I do not have too many years left.

A couple of days ago someone posted what painters and decorators are charging. Might be a handy career change for me. Something I might be able to retrain easily enough for and AI-Safe
