Sounds reasonable, no reason why we don't have the same for bus gates operating with the same data restrictions.

I don’t for one minute disagree about the need for cameras, but I do think that the impact of non-compliant drivers is being overstated by some posters, when compared with the effect of the impact of compliant drivers.

Time will tell but I certainly won’t be judging it in the first week - let’s see what it’s like after a month.

Public transport is slow, expensive, uncomfortable and full of antisocial elements in the city centre and certain routes. It's already a struggle to convince anyone to willingly give up the car as it is without immature nonsense like the above.

Basically none of this is true. Public transport is cheap, invariably quicker than driving most of the time and I'm not sure what exactly is so uncomfortable about it.

The majority of people already use public transport. It is the minority of recalcitrants who want to convince themselves they are the norm that are the issue.

Tbf it can be hit or miss depending on where you live and where you're going to.

I'm lucky to live where the C-spine routes converge so the buses are regular and there's QBC all the way from there into town. Choosing to drive instead of the bus for that journey in most instances would be insanity and anyone who insists on doing so out of stubbornness (as opposed to a genuine need) deserves to feel the consequences of that.

On the other hand, I remember living on routes where you could get off the bus at certain points, walk for 20 mins and meet the same bus again after it's done its scenic housing estates tour. So I can sympathise with people living on those routes who choose to drive. Hopefully Busconnects address that particular issue.

I'm in the unfortunate position at the moment where to drive to work takes 20 mins, cycling 1 hour and public transport takes 1hr25 so I end up driving to work quite a bit even though I hate driving and would far prefer to cycle/take public transport.

I don't think anyone is saying that the non-compliant motorists are having a big effect, but just stating that plenty of people are not following the rules.

It's impossible to cater to every journey, but it hits far, far more than it misses and is only improving (and yes BC should improve the scenic detour routes). I would also be surprised if these restrictions are impacting anyone who falls into the "miss" category.

Road rules aren't really enforced anywhere else in Dublin, so it shouldn't be a surprise in this case either.

How many times do you see cars breaking lights, parking in cycle lanes, ignoring pedestrian crossings and so forth.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,838 ✭✭✭BlueSkyDreams

    Exactly. This needs to happen.

If the Guards cant even patrol the streets in the city centre then they arent going to be prioritising traffic offences.

One of my big pet hates is that the only realistic way to cross the liffey in west Dublin is by getting in your car and crossing the toll bridge.

The castleknock hotel is only 1km as the crow flies from liffey valley shopping centre. There are no buses using the toll bridge but that's basically a non stop service across motorway, it doesn't serve places where people can get on or off.

If you want to cross the liffey by bus it's somewhat possible, by bike it's impossible unless you're a Tour de France cyclist and walking, you can forget about it, impossible. It's hard to imagine that we've 2 urban areas with possibly 100k population each, 1km between them and basically no way of travelling between them without a car.

The one thing that does annoy me is that my particular journey that's not served by public transport is from one junction on the M50 to another so it's not like I'm an outlier that's unsuitable for public transport service. Dublin really needs to sort its **** out with cycle routes/bus routes that can follow the M50 route.

Yes, that is a big black spot, though I'm unsure of the practicalities of running regular bus services along the M50. There are thankfully more orbital routes inside the M50 being rolled out so hopefully progress gets made

There are at least some M50 services.

For a couple of months earlier this year I was a regular user of the W4 from Liffey Valley to Blanchardstown when I was visiting someone in Connolly Hospital. It was very handy albeit not frequent enough to do without planning.

I work near the red cow and I've a colleague who lives in Tyrrelstown. By car, it's only 15-20 minutes each way to go 2 junctions on the M50 (but they have to pay the toll both directions). If they were to use public transport, it takes around 2 hours each direction and involves going all the way into town and at least 2 transfers...

It's ridiculous how much of a barrier the liffey is in west Dublin in this day and age and the Dublin Transport Strategy has zero, even conceptual, solutions for it.

A classic example of the disconnect between the user and the provider/planner.

What about a bus W4 between Liffey Valley SC and Blanchardstown SC?

This evening was a shìtshow at the bus gates. At Bachelors Walk, cars were piling into the yellow box, preventing buses from emerging from the bus stops into the bus lanes.

At Burgh Quay, cars were just sitting across the junction waiting to turn right onto O'Connell Bridge, blocking buses from continuing from the Bridge into D'Olier Street.

Almost 10 minutes to go one stop on the 145. If anyone has any faith in Dublin City Council to manage public transport road infrastructure, it is sadly misplaced.

just to endorse Your assertion of public transport:

I am an OAP from Newbridge & use public transport a lot. Between trains Luas & bus/coaches, aside from the Luas being crowded I think Ireland can hold its head high with regard to service & comfortability.

One unexpected issue with the bus gate on Bachelors Walk is with how difficult it is for cyclists! If you're trying to turn right onto O'Connell Bridge you can easily get stuck behind the two bus lanes as they tend to be full with buses now.

For the impatient cyclist, they might decide to cycle up the left turn lane and try to sweep across to bypass the buses which is extremely dangerous.

Really needs some kind of dedicated bike lane.

It's another reason why private cars should have had to turn left onto Jervis as it would have allowed that lane to become a cycle lane and adjust the traffic.

As expected, the original scheme was well designed, the current 'compromise' set up that slightly benefits only the Selfridges corporation was always going to be a **** show. cars should have been diverted up Jervis Street and there should be no right turn from Burgh quay to OCB, the whole point is to stop cars using the centre as a through route and there they are funnelling cars through OCS.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,035 ✭✭✭Daith

The quays at O'Connell Bridge are busy aren't they.

What is the reason to allow cars who normally would go from Burgh to Aston Quay to now take a right over the bridge to O'Connell St?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,838 ✭✭✭BlueSkyDreams

In fairness, If they are travelling up OCS to park, then they are travelling to shop/socialise/work in the city.

I thought the idea was to stop cars driving through the city, not to stop them driving into the city.

The goal of this is to allow buses to travel faster through the city.

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators Posts: 40,128 Mod ✭✭✭✭Seth Brundle

To discourage people using the city core as a through route.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,035 ✭✭✭Daith

Is O'Connell St North not part of the city core though?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,838 ✭✭✭BlueSkyDreams

Indeed, but also whilst allowing cars to enter and park in the city.

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators Posts: 40,128 Mod ✭✭✭✭Seth Brundle

It is but most drivers travelling along Burgh Quay don't want to go to OCS so will avoid that route choice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,035 ✭✭✭Daith

I guess but my point is...why give them that choice anyway?

But there is nothing stopping them driving through ocs and going further north
