The quality of local representatives doesn’t inspire confidence for a directly elected mayor with extensive powers. Likely contested by cranks and hyper-NIMBYs - the hope that a competent centrist with genuine executive experience at the level required gets elected is wishful thinking I think. More likely to end up with some populist left or right nutter with no experience of being an effective leader of a large organization like DCC.

A high profile executive position is far more likely to attract competent and effective candidates. Nimbyism is less effective on a city-wide scale also. It is something Dublin desperately needs.

Not sure why this is in infrastructure. Wouldn’t one of the politics forums be more appropriate?

Can be in both depending on powers given to the position.

    "rabidly anti motorist"

Let's not turn this into another one of those threads, especially as this statement is particularly untrue.

Mod: This should be in the politics forum, so I am closing this thread.

It will just go down another rabbit hole otherwise.
