Learner permit-what roads?

    Hi all,

    Can anyone tell me what roads you cannot use when on a learner permit?? Getting conflicting information from people. I'm aware of the sign at motorway sliproads saying no learners but unsure of the rest?

    Motorways are the only roads a learner can't use, as far as I'm aware.

    A learner isn't licenced to ride or drive outside the 26 counties.

    What kind of information were you getting?

    People telling you can use the M50, M1 etc

    They are motorways, so you are not allowed on them as a learner.

    Any of the "M" roads are motorways.

    for bike

    No motorways full stop

    no driving unaccompanied before you have completed IBT.

    You MUST wear a vest with an L plate on the front and back

    Besides that you are able to drive anywhere else. N, R & Backroads are all good. Just no road that has M in front of it (M1, M50, M9, M11 etc are all no go).

    You can't ride on the road till you complete IBT. There's no requirement for a learner on a bike to be accompanied because they can't carry pillions.

    N roads are fine. Those are national roads. Go for it. Bear in mind, limit is 100kmh. So will generally be a quicker pace of traffic around you

    you can ride on the road with your instructor with you. That is accompanied driving and part of the IBT no?

    Once you complete IBT you don't need to be accompanied. You should still get some lessons but they aren't mandatory
