    Hi,
NordVPN (local server, NordLynx protocol) reduces my broadband speed by 50% (tested with multiple runs using Ookla).
It may be a difficult quesiton to answer, but would ExpressVPN be any better? I am thinking of signing up for a month to test it but was wondering if anyone else did the same…thanks.

What speeds are you actually getting with /without VPN on ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 149 ✭✭justmehere

I'm on eir 1GB plan. I get around 980 Mbs without NordVPN and about 500 Mbs with it on.

I would have thought 500 Mbs over a VPN was pretty spectacular? I'd doubt you'll do any better with a public service ?

I'm not sure what you mean by "a public service" but I didn't know if losing 50% of bandwidth to a VPN is normal.
So I was wondering if it was just a NordVPN thing or whether I'd experience the same with ExpressVPN, and was seeing if anyone else had used both products.

Or is anyone using ExpressVPN, prehaps you could post your with/without VPN speeds.

I use ProtonVPN currently I just got this result on my Starlink connection, which is pretty much my usual non-VPN speed:

Having said that, looking back over my history of speed tests while using ProtonVPN, I've had one down as low as 40Mbps and a bunch of others in the 140-ish range.

It's likely a result of the loading on the server I'm connected to. I can tell that the test above was run while the server was at ~25% load. I would assume that the 40Mbps speed may have been run on a more heavily loaded server.

    Hi

I am with VM 1GB and also have NordVPN

    My speeds

    Settings Auto (Recommended)

    vpn off 927.70 Upload Mbps51.56

vpn On 895.2 Upload Mbps 13.88

    NORDlynx selected
vpn off 900.07 Upload Mbps 51.33

vpn on 881.38 Upload Mbps 49.15

I would contact NordVPN ask them to investigate.

I found them quite helpful. And polite, my problem was caused by the cloudflare snafu - not Nordvpn.

Have you checked for updates ?.

Your not losing bandwidth on your Internet connection. You still connect to the Internet at 1Gb/s

The traffic upstream of the NordVPN servers towards the Internet is likely capped around 500Mb/s, whoch is pretty good in fairness. If you want 1Gb/s over a public VPN service, you'll likely be looking at enterprise grade solutions, which will be prohibitively expensive.

    That's impressive.

Yes, and I get around the same speeds via UK. Using NY usually drops to high 600, low 700Mbs.

Without VPN never get the full Igb from VM. Usually high 900

Last NordVPN update few weeks ago revamped the layout and greatly improved the speed. Which is why posted to OP to check for updates.

Only wee problem they introduced a new tool, "Threat Protection Pro" which I no longer switch on as it is far too aggressive

Nice to see, i used to see a big dropnwhen using their service. Nord may have updated some of their infrastructure to handle more bandwidth when the traffic is encrypted. It's takes a lot of power to encrypt network traffic at that kind of throughout.

If you want to use a VPN, I find Mullvad much better. They are super cheap and won't sell your data. What's NordVPN now, like 100 a year?

My advice would be to use a non-well known one. I'd consider NordVPN and ExpressVPN to be the most famous and common ones and therefore most popular.

As others have said getting half a gig is pretty impressive.

    Yes, it's the latest version.

Connected to Irish server. All settings standard. VPN protocol is "Auto" which I believe defaults to NordLynx.

    Hi,

And mine again. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than me can explain. You could also contact Nordvpn, give them a link to this. ?

Finally, even via USA still good

    And Nordlynx selected for all

  • Registered Users Posts: 149 ✭✭justmehere

Umm, I wonder if it's Eir that's trottling the speed then?

    Hi,

Just went up to NrdVPN but could not get a human. Perhaps you should contact them tomorrow, open a ticket. Then you could reference these posts ?

I contacted them while back, found them quite helpful

    Hi,

only other advice, uninstall it completely, then download and make a nice clean install of newest version.

First of course double check you have your passwords saved

    Thanks for the comments J_R.

I raised a ticket with them yesterday. So far what they've asked me to do hasn't made any difference.

Today we did the equivalent of clearing browser cookies with Settings > General > Run diagnostics > Reset app

That didn't make a difference either. Have just sent a scrrenshot back to them, so we'll see what they suggest next, but I'll keep your suggestion in mind, thanks.

Just to give you an update in case you're interested.

After the reset app didn't work, I disabled IPV6 which didn't help, then ran a network flush, again no change.

But by fluke, I disabled the Web Protection module and now my VPN speed is not too far from my actual broadband speed. There are six options under Web Protection, and a DNS filtering option. I tested turning each one on individually to see what it would do to speed. In summary, none seemed to drastically change the speed - it must be a collective effect:

    Without VPN: 940.25
    With VPN, standard options: 517.55
    All options off: 888.37

Speed when this option is on, all others off:
    Scam: 499.79
    Malware: 557.42
    Tracker: 546.23
    Blocker: 511.69
    Trimmer: 555.46
    Search: 506.70

    WP off, DNS on: 769.65

    Hi,

Well done. When on to Nordvpn again inform them. You might get a few months extension on your sub..
