Building living quarters at bottom of garden

Hi there! I live in a 3 bedroom terraced house with a large enough garden. Approx 7 meters in width. It has access to a lane way at the end of the garden

I'm considering renting out my house, while building a 2 bedroom living quarters are the end of the garden (1 story)

I understand there are major obstacles as regarding planning permission (*neighbours are sound btw)

Anyway, my considerations……

-A log cabin (approx 6 m wide * 12 m long)

-a small habitual building (same dimensions)

My main questions is "Is it worth it?" or is it too much hassle?

Any construction project has a certain amount of hassle.

Check out the planning first.

If it's impossible you can forget it and consider other options.

not going to get planning, you have a house they'll never give you planning to build another house so you can rent out your own house

Straight off the bat, you need planning.

Two 72m2 structure is pretty big. Is there even 25m2 garden left over?

Chances are non existent I would say, it's basically the size of a house again in the garden.

How long is the garden?
You’re describing essentially a separate dwelling. It’s possible. You’d need significant space between them as it not ancillary to the main house.

The fact he has a house shouldn’t be relevant to planning here. People who have houses develop their property, for the purposes of renting/selling all the time. Either the land is suitable for another dwelling, or it’s not.

Obviously, there are “Local” policies that require a housing need for one-off housing. But that’s not something that applies nationally, and is not found in planning law.

So maybe 18m or less after the house is built at the end of the garden. You’ll need to be careful of overlooking distances.

In general, there should be adequate separation (traditionally about 22 m between 2-storey dwellings) between opposing first floor windows. However, relaxation of this standard will be considered where the careful positioning of opposing windows can prevent overlooking even with shorter back-to-back distances.
