Round 2 was 1 v 4 and 2 v 3. Seedings worked out except for Limerick 3 beating Offaly 2. But three of the 2 v 3 games were won by a single point. Kildare have a scoring difference of plus 44 after 2 games.

After two rounds the only thing decided for sure is that Down have won Group 4 and Offaly will finish bottom of that group and cannot progress.

The draw for the next stage will be made after the Sunday games. On RTE radio.

Unlike in Sam Maguire, only three out of the four third placed teams will go into a Preliminary QF. The worst of the four will be replaced by New York.

Waterford finally win a game in the Tailteann Cup!

Apart from New York they were the only team never to have won a game in the competition before today.

They are unlikely to proceed due to their very negative points difference but a great way to end their season all the same.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,863 ✭✭✭CrabRevolution

They want a championship format where even the weakest counties in Ireland have a realistic chance of winning Sam.

If the GAA manages to achieve that paradox, fair play to them…

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,485 ✭✭✭✭bucketybuck

No paradox needed, just use an open draw 32 team knockout competition like they should be doing.

The one time they did anything similar we had Tipperary (currently 4th division) scoring 3-13 in the semi final.

Weaker teams have a real chance of causing upsets and going on a run, every game matters, interest from supporters would go through the roof.

But nah, they'd rather have meaningless scutter games behind a paywall.

We had a 28 team straight knockout competition in the qualifiers for nearly 20 years. Why weren't stadia packed to the gills for those games if the prospect of elimination is what the fans crave?

Tipperary score a freak goal in the 4th minute of added time to beat Wexford and progress to the knock-out stages. Wexford are out as a result.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭YabaDabaDooley

Some turnaround for Tipp after Wexford beat them only couple months ago by 14 points on their home turf.

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,064 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Leitrim also arrived into 2024 with no wins, so Waterford were only a few weeks behind. Onward and upwards for Waterford after their win in Munster.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,272 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

Wicklow beat Carlow in the decider in their group to see who'd progress

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭YabaDabaDooley

Good to see lots of close games in Tailteann Cup today. All teams going for it against equally matched teams. Fermanagh v Laois looks another belter. Ft Fermanagh 3-11 v Laois 2-13

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,272 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

Leitrim had 1 win prior to this year. They beat Antrim in 2022 when it was a straight knock-out competition and then lost on penalties to Sligo in the next round.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,272 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

Fermanagh beat Laois by a point to top their group and skip the preliminary quarter-final round.

That's 2 Ulster group winners so far with the possibility of a third if Antrim can beat Sligo tomorrow

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,272 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

    …scored 3-13 and conceded 5-20.

That wasn't an open format either since it used the Provincial competitions as a filter to get to the All Ireland.

The current system also offers any team in the country a path to the All Ireland via the provincial championships. In fact it's even easier since they don't have to win their province (which was the case in 2020 when Tipp made it), just get to the final.

Great win for Waterford just rewards for the effort the squad and management put in. Pity scoring difference (and new york) ended the year

Longford must be really gone down hill. Shows that O'Byrne Cup means SFA

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,536 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

There is no way Longford should be the worst team in the country, they ought to be able to operate comfortably at D3 level, and look for D2 football every now and then when they gain a fair win and players at the right point in their career cycle.

There is isn't bottomless poop of talent there, but it's decent enough if used properly. I'm not laying the blame at Paddy Christie's door, but the last two years have been an absolute disaster.

What saved the Tailteann Cup in the last two years was that they finished with good competitive finals in Croke Park. A real feelgood factor for Westmeath and Meath.

But there have been a lot of absolute hammerings too, which isn't great.

I don't really have a perfect solution. Potentially 3-tier could be worth a try, with both junior finals in Croke Park ahead of senior semi finals.

Realistically, most of the teams in the Tailteann Cup have zero chance of making it to the semifinals or finals, when you have the likes of a Kildare or Down in there. Similarly the likes of my own Clare play in the Sam Maguire but have zero chance of actually winning, or reaching a final.

We now have two tiers, each with 16 teams.

Maybe could have 12 teams in Sam, 10 in Tailteann and 10 in a third competition.

Story of the season. Conceded 18 goals across 12 games in league and championship. A lot of them identical to the last too- either cut open through the middle or full-back left isolated one on one inside.

Unlucky to miss out on promotion (though conceded 3 goals in a tight game too), yet the bottom three in Division 4 all won at least one game in the Tailteann which we didn't.

That's a bit embarrassing tbh and maybe coin toss for home advantage the way to go

Some very convenient draws for the PQF. Limerick vs Tipp, Antrim vs London

Two possible pairings, Laois v Wicklow and Limerick v London were ruled out.

The four top seeds all got through to the QF stage, with only Sligo dropping a point. Kildare had a plus 51 point scoring difference. Laois, Leitrim and Antrim justified their Seed 2 rating by coming second in their groups. But the other Seed 2 Offaly failed to get even a point. Tipp and London exceeded expectations by progressing as Seeds 4. And Waterford also finished third, but are replaced by New York. Longford and Wexford along with Offaly finished on zero points.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,272 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

That's pretty bad. It was the perfect recipe for something like that. 2 winless teams that, given their brutal score difference, were unlikely to progress even if they had won, and the match being played in a neutral venue.

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,064 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

They were entitled to be winless. Their two losses were each against higher seeds. Their brutal scoring differences were courtesy of the Kildare juggernaut. Kildare 5-15 Waterford 0-06. Kildare 3-25 Longford 1-11. But Longford only lost to Seed 2 Leitrim by one point.

Longford as Seed 3 should have beaten Waterford. And if they had won by 3 or more, they would have progressed, and Tipp would have lost out to New York. There is no way they should have risked having to take the long trip to Waterford.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,654 ✭✭✭MacDanger

Why is the Leitrim match on in Longford instead of Carrick?

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,345 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Pitch is being relaid in Carrick

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,272 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

    Fair play to Wicklow.

    Decent season for them

Both New York and London gave a very good account of themselves today but Antrim and Laois progress. The four group winners (Sligo,Fermanagh,Down,Kildare) with home advantage will be expected to reach the Croke Park semi finals.
