Surprised this is getting so much coverage in our state media - it's not like RTE give a flute really about Georgia. It's probably what this law attempts to call out that irks the likes of RTE who certainly have their own agenda.

I'm open to being told otherwise by discussion here but on the face of it, it seems like the government there are aware of the damage that unfettered NGOs can do as we see here ourselves. Especially more so when foreign money pours in to those NGOs effectively undermining state policy.

I don't see an issue with it once the rules are only used to force NGOs etc to flag that they are funded by foreign interests and so interested parties during debate can call out that those they are arguing against are possibly bearing the interests of outside agents and so should be viewed in that light

The Ireland for the Irish crowd just want a right wing white ethno state like Russia have. Georgia are protesting because they want to be part of the EU, and this law has been enacted due to Russian influence in Georgia.

I was listening to this on Drive time and to be honest I was surprised by the line the presenter was taking, being dead set against it. Seemingly it will curtail pro European groups over there, or that's the fear.

And the reason I was surprised is because if it were proposed here you can be sure that the likes of RTE would be all for it because of foreign actors spreading disinformation. I suspect foreign money pushing an agenda is only a problem when they push the wrong message.

on the broader scale of things we should be very interested in what is happening in Georgia. It probably turn out to be a repeat of The Maiden in Ukraine and where all that is playing out in UKr at this very moment. If we think that the whole attitude of Russia towards world domination, world peace, nuclear prolification, objective of being most powerful nation, interference in in world economic , social, cultural affairs , etc, etc, etc have had/ is having/ will have no effect on US IRISH then what’s going on in Tbilisi should have no interest for us.

I would rather America exercise its influence in the world rather than the necrotic influence that characterizes Russia.

If people think a Russian-ruled world order would be better for everyone, then they seriously need to think twice.

America is the least worst option, and I suggest that anything that pushes back Russian influence can only be considered a good thing.

I hope the Georgian people manage to overthrow the Russian-puppet government.

I'd rather have Irish people exercise influence over Ireland. Keeping the public informed of the fact that certain NGO's are dependent on foreign funding is a good start.

It would be no harm to have such a law making sure every group has to declare who is funding them and by how much, far too much interfering by NGOs and charities of all political persuasions IMO.

Yes, it's a bizarre form of illogic.

We can all agree that the US has, to put it mildly, made mistakes in their foreign policy. We also know that the enemies of the US, such as Putin, capitalize on those mistakes. But to then jump to the conclusion that a Russian-dominated world order would somehow be a preferable outcome to the world order we have today, is utterly ridiculous (or to passively allow that outcome to manifest by not fighting back against it / isolationism).

If Putin and Iran and China had their way with the world, it would be dictatorial — with many tens of millions of deaths and it would make US foreign policy look flawlessly angelic by comparison.

Anyone against that kind of tyrannical world order must support the Georgian people against the Russian puppet government that presides over them. I certainly hope these protests don't die down.

It's about time their "government" was permanently removed from power.
