Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

GPS tracker for cattle?

    Hello,

I am interested in exploring a GPS tracker for cattle. I searched online and it seems to be some devices but they are available in America or the UK.

I have some experience with GPS trackers for pets and often they can come with a subscription charge.

I would be looking for a GPS tracke preferably without a prescription. The herd is breaking loose and I could put a tracker on one and hope they all follow each other.

Is there anything available within Ireland or the EU?

What you need is nofence collars. your stock shouldn't be wandering. Nofence would be your best use of mapping and GPS.

Keeping your cattle in should be a higher priority than putting trackers on them, it would be better for you, your relationship with your neighbors and your public liability.

The no fence collars could be an idea but they would need a subscription and a collar on every animal.

Electric fences are usually subscription free.

    This 100 times over..

The GPS might be interesting to see cattle behavior but as a tool to relocate cattle that are escaping regularly signals a mismatch in priorities.. Put the money into fencing, then instead of subscriptions for GPS data put that money towards fence maintenance..

ah seriously this has to be a p**s take 😂😂 how far are the wandering if you need a GPS, instead of spending money on a GPS spend it on fencing your farm for god sake. I gave out to someone a few weeks ago for buying one for his dog that’s wandering about, I tried to tell him that the dog shouldn’t be wandering around in the first place. This is just a whole new level 😂😂

Digitanimal, or NoFence but the latter will be more expensive and the virtual fencing aspect may or may not work if there are uncollared cattle about.

Is the OP grazing cattle in Ireland, or the upland meadows of some European mountain range

I'd say ask the doctor for a prescription for yourself.

Has anyone here used the NoFence collars?

We've big rambling high hill that has very good boundary fence but nothing inside so cattle just roam around. It's grand for them and it's low maintenance but not ideal at all when you need them down to dose or whatever.

We don't manage grazing there either it goes without saying so this might help although it's not main concern.

There was an article recently on a project using similar on a hill farm. The product wasn't no-fence but it was also from Norway. They had it on the adult cows and not the calves. Here it is:
