I remember so-called camp one over egging their pudding and saying things like Biden was “ completely senile” etc. While the second camp acknowledged, he was not the same man that he was 10 20 30 years ago. And I don’t remember the second camp ever saying that Biden had a 100% chance of winning. Can you find a source for that quote?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,001 ✭✭✭Christy42

I believe most in the 2nd camp favoured a younger candidate but mostly just figured Biden was better than Trump.

As for age you have to admit it is embarrassing to have most of the attack lines you have been using applying more to your own candidate than the opposition.

Pro trumpers seem far more unhappy about Biden pulling out of the race than Democrats judging from the response so far. That might be the difference, Republicans are more a cult of personality with no one of Trump's stature ready to step up. Democrats were able to switch candidates late in the day, neuter most of the opposition talking points while maintaining the same policies and get a boost in the polls and funding.

The US President needs to be ready to jump out of bed at 3 in the morning and make world/history changing decisions.

Which is why the flak will focus on Trump now , remember his famous "executive time" whch was basically code for "can't be arsed to do any work".

The Democrats couldn't really say much about Trumps general indolence and his utter disdain for the actual "work" of being President as people would simply though back nonsense about how "Joe Biden doesn't know what day it is" etc.

Now though , they have a free shot at all of Trumps weaknesses - He's fundamentally lazy , he loves the rallies etc. as the adulation feeds his narcissism , but can anyone really see Trump sitting in the oval office on the phones burning the midnight oil rallying congress to get a bill passed??

don’t forget the record breaking amount of golf Trump played as president.

    I don’t think Kamala golf’s?

It's a cult , plain and simple and he feeds off their delusion and adoration.

Not a chance he'd try to moderate that or get them to dial back even slightly..

Malignant Narcissist of the worst kind.

Not a chance he'd try to moderate that or get them to dial back even slightly..

He’s no John McCain. McCain dragged me towards his camp doing that before, you know, real qualities of good leadership? But clearly many people were looking for someone to confirm their echo chambers for them, not lead them. (Then he went with Palin, and wanted to double down on Iraq and Afghanistan, “maybe 100 years” oof, America was tired boss, even if that was just posturing for political capital)

    I get your overhead point

But to be fair we never saw a Trump presidency where he wasnt just stonewalled the whole time. We likely never will. Even if he gets back in, the whole "become a dictator" rubbish could and would never happen.

  • Registered Users Posts: 269 ✭✭Redliketoast

The dems are acting like nothing has happened. They are pretending they werent saying Biden is fine 2 weeks ago.

The age thing isnt a problem for Trump (right now, as I said earlier). Trumps flaw is that he is a p***k. He is selfish and all about himself. Any time he forgets someones name it is more down to narcissism than old age. The attack lines form the non morons were not about Biden is old. They were saying Biden has deteriorated. Old age is the cause, not the reason.

Republicans are 100% a cult. They are all bible bashing, America Guns and God above all else. They hate anyone who is different.
But you dont think Dems are a cult also? They are all for free speech unless you are saying something they dont agree with.

Both sides have the "extreme" Far side. But the trick is for each side to get as close to center as possible. Because while the far side nuts exist, it is the center that make up the majority. Thats why so many like to straddle the fence and like guns while also claiming to be a liberal.

Its over simplified to talk like everyone who is Pro Trump, is a gun loving bible basher who hates women and gay people.

Republicans won the house and senate when he won. He wasn't so much stonewalled as unable to work with anyone, even his own party to get something done.

As for a dictatorship, probably not but seems like a good idea to not let someone try. He has much more control over then Republican party than he did 8 years ago. I can't really call Pence a moderate but anyone not willing to bend the knee has been sidelined so the odds of it happening if he gets in again are higher than 8 years ago.

Trump fell out with everyone. His VP actively ran against him this time. Even his daughter doesn't want to get involved again.

If Trump can only achieve things when he has everyone on his side and is willing to do whatever he wants, that is not much of a leader. Compare that with Biden who managed to get many bi-partisan agreements done, including the legislation on border which would have made big impacts on immigration but was pulled on Trumps command because he didn't want America to solve the problem

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,001 ✭✭✭Christy42

Biden and Harris are both centrists. Pelosi too. So most of the Dems leadership is already central. Trump is an extremist and the Republicans no longer have policies outside of Trump. Dems don't have the same level of worship about anything. Republicans go on more about freedom of speech than Dems so that doesn't work. They also get annoyed very quickly when people say things they don't like.

Age is absolutely an issue for Trump. It isn't the biggest issue he has but it is one. Falling asleep and forgetting names right on the back of a campaign focussing on mental fitness. A young man might get away with that but he is old and voters will start to make the judgements they were encouraged to make about Biden.

Image is everything in politics and Trump does look old, goes on mad rambles, falls asleep when he shouldn't. It may be for different reasons but voters have been primed to make these connections for old men and they will start to check those boxes for him.

Hell don’t even have to wait till then - he could suffer a medical episode in the next 5 months - what would happen then I wonder?

  • Registered Users Posts: 269 ✭✭Redliketoast

Oh Vance will 100% bend over on request. Zero doubt about his lack of back bone. But he will not be able to form a dictatorship "for one day" or longer. It is impossible and not a serious worry from anyone.

They did win both houses. But many republicans didnt want him in charge and came out and said it. His own party often voted against him.

Lets be honest. Trump is neither a Republican or a Democrat. He is an independent who will say whatever it takes to get what he wants

  • Registered Users Posts: 269 ✭✭Redliketoast

All tinfoil hat rubbish is embarrassing. Its as much of a coups as someone trying to convince him not to run. Thats not a coups, thats strategy.

The Dems (the party at least) will be far from happy right now. They have 4 months to convince the undecided, that Harris is competent. Biden was deteriorating yes but he had experience. Harris is not that solid. I did mention why I think she has a good chance in the other thread though.

but they will be a lot happier than 3 weeks ago for sure and see the tantrums from MAGA the last 2 days is an added bonus I would guess.

Both houses voted for that poorly written tax cut. Then, the last centrist House leader, Ryan, bailed having gotten what he wanted and McCarthy took over.

The GOP's absolute inability to pass coherent legislation was not due to them sabotaging CFTrump - it was due to ineptitude and the elevation of wingnuts like Boebert, Greene, Gosar, Gaetz and others to Congress and their own infighting. What little got done, was via executive order, usually those lasted a bit until being rejected by the courts.

The one thing that made the USA a little better off during CFTrump's administration, was the GOP's ineptitude and CFTrump's laziness. "Executive time" all day long my hole. Naps and golf. All CFTrump could motivate himself to do, was go to rallies. A POTUS serious about being POTUS wouldn't have announced his reelection campaign right after being sworn in.

But, that's why the GOP have CFTrump, he's a useful tool, all he does is campaign for POTUS, he's not interested in governing. Trips overseas to fawning dictatorships are what his idea of foreign policy is. Wanted his own Bastille-day parade. Stuff like that. Legislation? Reaching bipartisan consensus on anything? That's work. Not for him, that's for the little people.

Well no. Trump didnt want Biden to get a win.

Biden's VP ran against him in 2020

  • Registered Users Posts: 269 ✭✭Redliketoast

I would agree regarding the republicans. They are as bad as our left sided parties in Ireland. Too many egos and not willing to get policy done.

As you said, it probably suits them to have a "figurehead"/Scapegoat

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,535 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

CFTrump didn't want to make progress on the border, like what happened under his admin. The GOP just toed the line, and sacrificed American's safety on the altar of CFTrump.

Trump's VP called him America's Hitler.

Lots of Democrats ran in the primaries against Biden. At least one other is in his cabinet, Pete Buttigieg. Politics after all is the art of the compromise.

They could just say that. Looks cringe to codeword it

Its fair to say we all know he is a convicted Felon. So we could just call him Trump for short? 😂

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 15,527 Mod ✭✭✭✭Quin_Dub

Nonsense , they had full control of the House and Senate for the 1st 2 years and he did F*ck all other than give himself a massive tax break.

He has absolutely ZERO interest in doing the work of President and is functionally incapable of negotiation or compromise.

He put no effort whatsoever into working to bring forward ANY legislation outside of his tax cuts.

    Agreed.

And it looks like another poster who has never heard of Project 2025. People really should educate themselves.

He disgraced the office in multiple ways, was the first president to attempt a coup and given his exposure as a disgusting racist, should never be allowed anywhere near the office.

Unfair, he has been well documented on social media into the wee hours.

Given the shape of the average toilet, does hours sitting there rage tweeting count as work done on the oval office?
