Pope Francis

Pope Francis has only confirmed again where the hierarchy in the Catholic church stand as he used a homophobic slur in his comments. He said that there were “already too many “‘frociaggine'” in some seminaries. In English, the term roughly translates to f****. Members in his staff tried to say that it was done in a joking manner!

The usual pearl-clutting from the progressives that are up in arms when people transgress their linguistics boundries, who are seemly so delicate at this time of the year that any statement contra their worldview is deemed <X>-phobic.

The full retraction for context "“The pope never intended to offend or express himself in homophobic terms, and he extends his apologies to those who were offended by the use of a term that was reported by others,” "

What he meant to say was that there are too many RAPISTS in the church already.

Maybe people are not objecting to the word but the attitudes behind it?

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

Henry Sire's Dictator Pope did note for all of the somewhat left leaning views of the Pope, his language can be very earthy. However, when seminaries become predominantly gay places where sexual harassment of students by senior staff was (hopefully not is) tolerated eg Maynooth, the number of seminarians shrinks to nothing. There are other issues like the role or purpose of the priest in these times, but PF is making a reasonable point. However, given how Ted McCarrick was able to run rampant for decades in the US harassing many seminarians (among other crimes), horse, stable door, and bolted comes to mind.

There was a bump in vocations around the Vatican II time, then a slump in the early 70s which has never been reversed.

I don't think this can be blamed on "the gays" but major changes in social attitudes and reduction in family size.

There used to be several seminaries in Ireland, not just Maynooth.

There were diocesan seminaries all over Ireland, plus seminaries for regular / order priests (say Passionists or Holy Ghost Fathers) whether missionaries or those with an enclosed or public vocation like teaching. A notable problem can be identified whether discipline was allowed to decay after V2 and in many cases this allowed sexual predators to run rampant, even becoming obtaining high authority to indulgence their sexual perversity. Micheál Ledwith leading Maynooth and ensuring whistleblowers say their careers destroyed is a good example. Archbishop (now Cardinal) Dolan's visitation suggests the mix of bad teaching and poor protection for students remained in place post Ledwith, and this place became the sole full scale diocesan seminary on this island, for reasons we will likely never learn. St Peter's College, Waterford, St Patrick's College, Thurles, Holy Cross, Clonliffe, Dublin, reportedly had issues, but closing down diocesan seminaries (oft times closed as seminaries like Thurles, there are schools or colleges serving lay students) seems not to have been wise. The Tridentine barracks model had its severe flaws and limitations, but it worked after a fashion, and what has followed after V2, just doesn't work. When the V2 generation passes on, the Church faces a very severe crunch.

Pope Francis' words express a frustration. The answers aren't easy or clear yet.

Ah the old "let's blame Vatican II for everything", as if clerical sexual abuse did not exist before Vatican II…

"I don't think this can be blamed on "the gays"

Hopefully, in the context of this thread, I hope your post is not offensive, although some might be justified in feeling that way!

    😥

    Or both.

He is suddenly telling Americans to vote with their conscience and won't pick a side.

Funny how the church only the church can decide it's not up to them to influence elections when it suits.

Can you point to an example of the church urging a vote for a political party?
