was an absolute genuine bona fide no hyperbole glorious start to the day here. From 7am right up to 10:30am. and then like as if someone flicked a switch along comes the grey slate.

Nice morning in Dublin 16. Still bright but the clouds are building. Another 20c or more day beckons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,682 ✭✭✭✭sryanbruen

August from 1960-1984 would have typically seen just 7 days of 20C+ at Dublin Airport. Currently every day except 2 has managed that so far and even those were still over 19.4C. Mean max of 21.6C to date there for August is +2.5C above average.

Must be one of the windiest summers on record in Cork. Constantly breezy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,490 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

Very wet. It's gloomy also, a touch a November about this morning. Due to brighten up after lunchtime. 14c N Kildare

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,991 ✭✭✭Storm 10

Very wet morning in Galway been raining since around 4am temp 15 degrees some Summer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,346 ✭✭✭highdef

A beautiful soft wet morning in Trim, County Meath, with a fantastic cool wind that ensures the moderate rain penetrates as many areas of you as possible with the associated high humidity guaranteeing that your water covered skin stays wet. Why have a nice calm, sunny and warm mid August morning when you can experience the glorious weather of this morning!

A description of this morning even Oscar Wilde would be proud of.

Dark, grey, moderate rain giving way to drizzle in Dub/Kildare. 17C so too warm to dress properly for it. Awful. I hope it dries up after lunch as promised.

But yesterday was a lovely day from 11am onwards when the drizzle finished. Some lovely proper sunshine which has become so rare here it seems.

Won't need to water the veg garden today.

    Clearing already

Edit. Drizzle followed by Heavy rain

Up to 85mm for August in Sligo now. Up to 115mm for August in Belmullet.

    6mm Casement for August.

And today again looking at sat24. Cluster of storms just spinning around the island all day yesterday and continuing today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 100 ✭✭HurlingBoy

Although it feels like a bad summer with no spell of warm, sunny blue skies weather it must be one of the driest summers. A small stream near me has run dry which I did not see even in the hot summer of 2022.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,490 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

Seems to be early for the usual end of summer Med storms, unless this is an isolated event. I always remember them mid/late September

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,188 ✭✭✭Elmer Blooker

don’t know your location but if it’s the Dublin area then you will have to continue to water your veg garden as only a mere 2.5mm fell overnight.

Only recorded 1.2mm of rain overnight, glass around here will remain brown. Fourth month in a row with below average rainfall.

Its like a switch was flipped in April.

Decent spell of above average temperatures too.

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

Squall like feature seems to have developed and is moving through Ulster at the moment. Will keep an eye to se eif anything develops further south into Leinster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,346 ✭✭✭highdef

A short sharp spell of rain before the front clears the country, mostly in the northern half.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,346 ✭✭✭highdef

Just had a 60 second power shower as that narrow back of heavier precipitation moved over Trim, Meath.

  • Registered Users Posts: 158 ✭✭Thunder87

Statistically dry maybe but June and July had loads of days with drizzle and light rain blowing in the wind, so wouldn't amount to much in terms of mm but still felt like unpleasant damp days. At least in Dublin.

e.g. here's the stats for Dublin airport, lots of days with rain reported in the 3 hour summaries but where the daily total is 'trace' or less than 1mm.

August has been mostly better with plenty of actual dry days, albeit a few crap days as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,312 ✭✭✭Hippodrome Song Owl

Interesting. It feels the opposite in West Dublin. June was dry, July was average, but we've only had 2 dry days in August. Not much accumulation, but nearly every day has light drizzle.

  • Registered Users Posts: 158 ✭✭Thunder87

I've been away for a good chunk of this month so can't really comment, mainly just going off reports on here which have been mostly positive this month. But here's the actual stats for August, 10 of 15 days at Dublin airport with rain recorded in the 3 hourly reports, so you're probably not far off

Currently among the windier this century to date at Cork Airport but doesn't stand out as anything exceptional. 1985 was atrocious! 2024 has averaged 9.0 kts here, 1985 averaged 12.2 kts! 12.2 kts = 23 km/h rounded for context.

2020 was the windiest this century so far and 2024 is a good deal below that so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 100 ✭✭HurlingBoy

The wind and also cooler temperature have probably contributed to drier land. Have temperatures exceeded 25 degrees any day this summer? Certainly can't recall any day in Munster although 23/24 some days.

Ya 25c hasn't been breached. Got 23c in Sligo one day. Even 20c unreachable here most days. Last few Summers 30c reached.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,312 ✭✭✭Hippodrome Song Owl

We've definitely had 24C in Dublin in the past week, don't recall 25C being reached.

@sryanbruen I'd love if you could give us the stats on how windy the summer was at Casement once August is done. It really has felt like the windiest summer ever, but it would be great to get the facts! Out of interest - where would I look to see basic wind stats for Casenent? The Monthly Averages page on ME doesn't cover wind from what I can figure, so I never know where to look.

Up until yesterday there had only been 6mm of rain recorded close to your met eireann weather station for the month of August, casement aerodrome…yet it's rained nearly everyday over your house

Today looks like a lovely day for those way out in the Atlantic! Not so good on the east coast of Ireland but I did enjoy seeing the North Dublin coast while approaching Dublin Airport and felt the cloudy weather made it more scenic this time.

In London for a few days. Not sure what the temp is but it feels pleasant except when in the Tube where it's baking.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Yeah, correct. It's usually September when the first proper cold fronts come down over Spain. However, they can get them at other times when there is a 'DANA' - which is an upper low. There's currently some cyclonic rotation over the balearics on the sat24 animation suggesting a low pressure system is present at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 630 ✭✭✭glightning

Actually, it's mentioned on news here for example :- https://www.majorcadailybulletin.com/weather/weather/2024/08/15/126603/mallorca-storm-the-dana-unloads-over-the-sea-night-and-returns-land.html

Grey, dull, overcast, cold wind, depressing morning. And no matter how far out you look the charts look the same, the same green ball of misery crossing the Atlantic and perpetually rotating over us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,063 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

similar here in north Mayo. I'm mildly uncomfortable in shirt-sleeves and would be virtually shivering if I was in a t-shirt

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,852 ✭✭✭Comhrá

I was sure Friday was flagged to be warm with sunny spells according to ME's forecast from two or three days back… overcast and 16c in Limerick at present.

  • Registered Users Posts: 97 ✭✭Needmoretea

Same in Dublin, was a lovely morning with blue skies, but a little cooler than yesterday. Now we're back to our slate grey skies

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,090 ✭✭✭KanyeSouthEast

was at a game last night. Got dark very early you can really see it now and it was cool. This morning is dry and cool. No wind thankfully. Again bar incredibly low but it is August and because of that low bar it’s easily been the best month of “summer”.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,244 ✭✭✭pauldry

Big difference West to East in August . 10 times more rain in Belmullet than Oak Park. I often see August as a Summer month East and South but an Autumn one West and North. Though it has been our warmest month it's also been our wettest. 50mm more possible next week so end up as one of the wettest of the year yet whereas East and South will likely finish below normal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,130 ✭✭✭squarecircles

that basterd wind, every where you go, from every direction, constantly blowing in your face, with slate grey perma stratus misery welded on tight,no gaps, no chinks of light, pig grey, i think ill go to to the off license this evening, and i dont even drink, i mean it literally would drive you out of you f'ing mind at this stage…frooze to death with no sun through all of may june and first half of july, then swamped with big heavy deluges of rain through july and august with constant wind and still crap temperatures. constant innacurate forecasts that make you want to tear your hair out, details constantly changing, unable to plan anything, just the one constant that is…

    15 degrees, grey pig gloom

    15 degrees ,grey pig gloom

15 degrees, grey pig gloom on and on and on and on and on it goes
