Assume will receive some kind of formal letter but how long before the

case (an appeal) will the letter be sent out?

You'll get a witness summons. The summons won't issue until the case has been listed for hearing (for obvious reasons). I'm afraid I don't know how long may elapse between the case being listed and the hearing date. It may not be very long.

If you have constraints that would prevent you from attending at a particular time (e.g. if you're going to be abroad) then best to tell whichever party is likely to want to call you as a witness. They have an interest in getting the case listed for a date when you are likely to be able to attend.
