Gary Lineker Mr Smarmy

Saw him on a podcast yesterday with Shearer and Richards from Germany about the Euros. Also there was Alastair Campbell. During the conversation Lineker said that he 'of course' had read Campbell's book and as he said it took a sly look at his ex football colleagues. This I interpreted as 'amn't I great to have read a book by a former political insider'.

It reminded of the time he was on the LL Show with Tubridy when he told Tubridy that he once took a penalty against some goalkeeper or other in England who used to play in Spain and that 'because I played with Barcelona I knew which side he would go and I scored'.

Can't stand this chap I'm afraid.

Well the "smarmy look" may be explained by the fact that Alastair Campbell has a podcast series called "The Rest Is Politics" which is produced by Goalhanger media, owned by Gary Lineker.

I don't know why you felt the need to start a whole thread on this. If I didn't like someone, I wouldn't be watching interviews with them or otherwise listening to them. It comes across as more than a bit hysterical, honestly.

I like Lineker. He's a class act though I couldn't care less about football.

What i always found weird with him…. 443 senior club appearances in England and Spain and for such a talented footballer and prolific goal scorer he never won a single league trophy, just a couple of cups over all those years.

Alex Ferguson tried to sign him when he left Barcelona, I think an agreement was in place but he changed his mind and went to Spurs…..scored a shîtload more goals alright , but only won one FA cup in his 3 seasons there…

Considering his huge talent as a footballer, you’d have to say he massively underachieved as a player and as a presenter…. He’s no Des Lynam…. but sort of inoffensive / decent at his job, occasionally smarmy but hey…
Still he’s making a shïtload of cash, in his early 60’s now and a multimillionaire from years in front of the camera, BBC, BT Sport, Al Jazeera Sport, NBC… and made a shîtload promoting Walkers crisps.

Interesting that Linker is self styled mr compassionate and loved by wokesters everywhere yet he's quite happy to get paid by the Qatari state broadcaster (while afterwards looking down his nose at Qatar as a country when he was there for the BBC) and platform Alistair Campbell (a man who falsified evidence to help start a war) .

Like all celebrities who lecture everyone else Lineker is a complete an utter hypocrite.

Shearer broke the British transfer fee twice. His transfer from Blackburn to Newcastle was a world record fee.

Yes indeed. Happy to take the silver. In fairness they all do. I don't know of any pundit who refused to go to Qatar as a matter of principle. There are those who argue that Lineker is almost a saint by taking in refugees into his house. That's something most people simply could not do from an accommodation point of view. I don't know where Lineker lives but it probably is not a three bed semi detached. He surely has, as he said himself, an 'entitled' life.
