Extractor fan for kitchen

Hi folks,

My parents have no cooker hood in the kitchen and don't have place for one. They need some sort of extraction fan for steam when cooking. Can you get in wall extractor fans like you would have in a bathroom and use in a kitchen? Main thing would be grease I guess but they don't fry much stuff, the main problems are steam from boiling veg. Kitchen ceiling needs constant painting because of it.

You can get hobs with built in extractors (like this IKEA one), though they're quite expensive.

What have they got currently? Is the lack of space due to a wall unit?

Yeah it's an old house. They have a free standing cooker and it's beside a cabinet that opens..they did have a hood there at one point but it was useless and severely restricted access to the press..the are quite old so changing the cooker isn't really an option. My mother is used to what she has etc..

The best option would most likely be one that extracts through an external wall but you would need to bore a 6" hole and run electric cable to it and a switch if that was the type you went for. Look on screwfix or amazon for types available as a guide. Is grease going to be an issue? Are there any like that with removable filter that can be cleaned?

I was thinking one with a humidistat might be good as it would cover them forgetting to switch it on

I just fitted one of them in my own kitchen but it's not fully working yet so I can't comment on it yet. It's mainly the moisture I think is the issue more than grease AFAIK. Use a humidity sensor in the room and see what the levels are.

If it's a bungalow you could fit a ceiling mounted cooker extractor and run duct out to nearest soffit

i have a flush ceiling extractor fan, works fantastically well, i got for aesthetics but may work in this scenario, not cheap mind

The size will be the same its the power that changes ie a more expensive better fan will have a higher extraction rate… it wont affect the size of the hole in the wall.

hi folks,

ive picked up a bathroom extractor for use in the kitchen at parents place but i'm having second thoughts now based on the temp of the steam off the saucepans etc

Are there going to be issues with the steam potentially tripping rcds etc or melting the fan? I don't know how quickly steams dissipates temp wise… the hole is about i could guess 1.25 meters above the cooker top.. maybe a little more
