That Red Bull pit stop problem getting the rear wheel off - changed the entire race. Mad stuff.
But Max extends his championship lead I guess so not all bad. 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,349 ✭✭✭McFly85

It was probably a track limits violation in fairness, he tried an overtake but locked up, wasn’t forced off track by Max - don’t know what the delay was.

Contact was 100% on Max though, and I don’t think he was racing fair up to that point, there was definitely a couple of double movements on previous overtake attempts by Norris.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,109 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

Stupid racing and surprised at Max

Both drivers will both be furious for different reasons

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,189 ✭✭✭mr_edge_to_you

He seems to get a lot of criticism but Zak Brown has done an amazing job at the top of McClaren in the last few years. Not found wanting when tough decisions needed to be made.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,109 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

right the coverage is going off now. Sky will be calling for max to be publicly executed and we’ll be hearing about this for the rest of the year

Another bs driver of the day award to Norris. Max is correct that Norris was dive bombing all over the place, not for the last incident fair enough but he was too aggressive trying to get past on previous attempts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,273 ✭✭✭waynescales1

If there’s more weekends like this I can see people turning against Verstappen pretty quickly. Defends way too aggressively, causes collisions and accepts no responsibility.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,763 ✭✭✭✭Inquitus

Aye it was clearly Verstappen's fault and needlessly so, Norris was going to cop a 5 sec penalty anyways so Max could have allowed him past and kept the gap under 5 secs. Rather than taking Norris out. Poor form.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,056 ✭✭✭mun1

Incident all on max today, and deserved his penalty , but “defends too aggressively, causes collision… “ , really ?

Don’t think he’s interested in your popularity contest, much like all the greats like Schumacher , senna etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,349 ✭✭✭McFly85

Haven’t seen Max that petulant in a good while - reckon he knew that McLarens pace would have given Lando a chance to get a 5 second gap before the end of the race so was trying to keep him back at all costs.

Lando was definitely over aggressive with his moves in turn 3 - I think that’s his frustration over the last couple of races coming out.

Gwan outta that. 😂 So it’s ok to dive bomb down the inside forcing the other driver off while going off track yourself? Lando’s race craft is a little lacking when it comes to these kinds of battles. Yes Max made one mistake by coming to the left too much and caused the accident, gets a penalty fair and square. It’ll be water off a ducks back for him.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 5,812 Mod ✭✭✭✭Irish Aris

So when Max does it it's OK but not for others?

Plus he weaved and moved under braking a couple of times.

He is the best driver for sure, but you should probably let go on this one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 747 ✭✭✭ricimaki

I do think decision making speed by the stewards needs to change. Norris flagged Max moving too late multiple times before the incident. There was also the track limits violations. It shouldn't take multiple laps for the stewards to decide these things…

Piastri really ruing over the track limits yesterday!

And Perez failing to get past a Haas say it all really.

At least we might have a bit of a battle for the lead more regularly now!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,273 ✭✭✭waynescales1

I didn’t know Verstappen fans were so fragile, their egos can’t handle the criticism, they’re cracking up already. Wait til they see social media over the next day or two.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,669 Mod ✭✭✭✭Andrew76

Let go of what? I’ve already said the contact was Max’s fault. Lando could’ve been smarter trying to get past is my point, too aggressive, silly dive bombs.

I'm surprised to see Max rattled in a race so easily,if this was a few weekends of that kind of pressure I'd get it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,056 ✭✭✭mun1

Nooooo!!! Not the social media !!!! How will anyone survive that🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,055 ✭✭✭thefa

My thoughts were the same. Tyre age would have given Norris a good shot at covering the 5 seconds if he got by quickly enough.

Really interesting look into the psyches. Norris was launching the car at some of those turn 3 attempts and Verstappen was testing the limits of defending. I think Norris still lacks a bit of experience competing at the front but this season should do wonders for that.

Didn’t enjoy all the shite on the radios. Reminiscent of 2021. Great ending to a race that I had almost given up on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,831 ✭✭✭Eoinbmw

Drivers need to be told to shut it asking for penalty a bit like being booked in football if you suggest a player be booked!

Yeah, Landos divebombing was aggressive but really it’s a Max signature move - Max is just much better at it though!

At the end of the day it was an exciting end to the race, after last season its brilliant to see regular fights at the front!

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 5,812 Mod ✭✭✭✭Irish Aris

Max has a history of aggressiveness and dive bombs. Was that OK ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,385 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Poor form from Max, and especially so in the immediate aftermath when he had a puncture and Lando tried to get through, he was driving him off the road to stay ahead (Max had no way of knowing that Lando also had a puncture).

You would have thought that after 3 world championships he'd have been savvier, but looks like he'll revert to his 2021 behaviour if he's in a tight battle.

Gutted that Oscar didn't get through at the end, but at least it'll be the only Tory victory this week...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,349 ✭✭✭McFly85

Even looking at the analysis on Sky there it looks like Max chose to leave the track to keep first place on the lap where Lando charged down the inside - there was enough space between them for Max to stay on track but come out of the corner in second I think.

Im a Max fan, he’s an unreal driver but today wasn’t great from him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,176 ✭✭✭Longing

Sky drooling at the mouth. Ant the dick and his analysis is british and Mclaren bias. Except for last move which we know Max got the 10 sec penalty for and rightly so. But when he was showing Max braking after the 100m board and Max lining the car up for turn 3. The clown saying moving under braking what a noob. Comical stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 227 ✭✭Soc_Alt

Max's fault for taking Lando out by purposely not leaving enough room

    But...

Lando purposely seeked revenge by turning hard into Max's car taking out the rear wheel.

Both Max and Lando knew exactly what they were doing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,385 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

2021 race threads were awful. The better/closer the racing, the worse the comments get. Here's hoping we don't have this sort of commentary for the rest of the season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,648 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

We either want close racing - and that is what you get today, no matter who it is between.

Or we can have the start of the season again and let Max or Lando fly off in the distance.

You've got to make your mind up. It is racing basically, they are pushing the limits all the time and that is what you get.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,874 ✭✭✭This is it

Yep. Hard, aggressive racing. One or the other overstepping slightly on a few occasions but, like you said, this is what you get.

I'm a Ferrari fan so little skin in the game, all I want is a fight for first and not one driver racing off into the distance and winning championships at a canter*.

yep, and this is why I switched off. Jesus, next week will be unbearable

    Tally ho the Brits

As a viewer today was exactly what I want to see. Both Norris and Max did things that were wrong and got punished.

The only complaint is have was that the stewards should focus on battles like that at the front and resolve the issues faster. Norris's 5 secs for track limits should've been handed out a lot quicker, Max should've got a black and white flag for his double moves in defence too before they made contact.

I see a comment from Norris along the lines of his friendship with Max will be affected if Max doesn't take responsibility for what he did. Norris will need a tougher shell if he's going to challenge for titles

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,056 ✭✭✭mun1

thought norris was silly for being walked into a discussion about his friendship with Max. He answered like an emotional 12 year old .

Exciting end to the race though and well done to Russell for sticking with it and getting the win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,416 ✭✭✭RoryMac

Yeah just saw the clip and Norris should've just avoided the question, I'm sure he gutted now but comes across a bit immature in his comments. Says he had a mistake free race until Max took him out?!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,532 ✭✭✭Harika

    Was fun, luckily tuned in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,282 ✭✭✭PsychoPete

Wheel to wheel racing will eventually end up with cars hitting each other that's just part of racing but of course sky will be up to their usual shenanigans especially with Silverstone around the corner

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,790 ✭✭✭✭Burkie1203

Has already started. Dragging up 2021 but conveniently not mentioning Silverstone.

I dont get the penalties though. There is zero consistency.

Landi got 5 sec, Max gets 10 sec today but Kmag got nothing at Monaco.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,282 ✭✭✭PsychoPete

I switched over to the euros because I knew what was coming with sky like it was Verstappens fault but when Lando startrd dive bombing you could see they were going to hit eachother. Stewards need to hand out penalties a lot quicker and it can't be that hard to be consistent

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,709 ✭✭✭blackbox

I don't know why Norris gave up. Surely if they'd just changed the tyres and sent him out without replacing the wing he'd have scored a few points.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,416 ✭✭✭RoryMac

There was a slowmo of him driving to the pits, the rubber from his tyre was tearing chunks out of the car. I'd say the body work was destroyed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,709 ✭✭✭blackbox

With only a few laps to go I thought he could still have made the top 10.

WIll lando get a 3 place grid penalty for silverstone for driving with one wheel shredding carbon fibre everywhere?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,128 ✭✭✭CMOTDibbler

Best bit for me was the analysis of the incident. Sky talking about track limits all day and your man draws his yellow line from Max's tyre to the white line and with a smug smile and a flourish declares not enough track left for Norris.

Great race. Delighted for George. Piastri do should have got a 10second penalty for ruining Charles race muppet

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

    Yeah. Couldn't remember. Thanks.

He was wearing that smug smile from start to finish which really got on my nerves. I just lolled when he produced his unassailable conclusion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,396 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

Close racing, which I always want to see. It was the Max of old and we know what that version of him is like, it’s like watching Senna or Schumacher all over again.

He pushed it over the line today, and Norris was dive bombing as well, more so in hope than anything. Neither driver should really care, Max probably won’t…this isn’t his first rodeo, Norris, as others have said, will have to develop a thicker skin with this if he is to challenge for more wins.

I agree with the speed, or lack of, with penalties. Had Max known of the penalty then he probably would have held off, and even at this he has extended his lead.

Sky coverage…well, are we surprised? The Brits love to have a go at a bad guy all day, they are more focused on Max over George’s win as well. You can be 110% sure that coverage next weekend with revolve around the incidents today as well, they’ll be bringing up 2021 and previous years all over.

Have to hand it to George as well, he was nowhere but his good qualification put him in that position.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,790 ✭✭✭✭Burkie1203

Amazing how very similar moves get very different commentary. Vetted moved way more than Max

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,908 ✭✭✭Captain_Crash

Saw most of the race but had to go out and missed the collision, but having seen replays of it I’d definitely attribute it to Max…. As has been said Norris was divebombing all day and could easily have cause the same! Norris is a great driver but needs to mature a little bit more before he can be considered a championship challenger, and if something like that can affect a supposed close friendship then someone’s gotta check thier attitude!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,708 ✭✭✭Charlie-Bravo

The race got interesting towards the end. Divebombing is fine once you don't take out the other. Simples about what happened, Max was moving and closing the angle in the braking zone. He's been divebombing for years when he came into F1 so should know to defend in a start line, but this time he couldn't keep Lando behind and ruined LN's race causing the contact.

The main thing here is Max's true style is there to see, never leave an option to pass, so the other driver chooses to either stay behind or be the one to cause contact.

Max was a bit deluded thinking he did no wrong today.

    -. . ...- . .-. / --. --- -. -. .- / --. .. ...- . / -.-- --- ..- / ..- .--.

Just back online since the race, I see the stewards have given Max 2 points on his licence (up to 4 now), according to racing-365.
I don’t think Max will revert to the ‘you shall not pass’ attitude he had in his earlier years, or at least I hope he doesn’t. He still has a decent lead in the championship and is wise enough to pick and choose his battles. I think frustration got the better of him today when he saw that 7 second lead he built up evaporate because of the pit stop problem. Lando was surely going to get a penalty for track limits and I don’t think he had enough laps left to build up a gap bigger than 5 seconds, so Max could’ve let him past and just stay close enough with DRS to still get the win.
Anyway, hopefully we get more close battles like this just without the contact. It’s mad how quickly McLaren have caught up to Red Bull.
Also, how the feck did Perez end up behind a Haas today, shocking stuff again.
