New extra step when texting

I use landscape mode for the larger keyboard when texting. When I click into the text field to start typing a message a new window pops up. White background instead of the usual dark and with a Done button. When I press Done this window closes and populates the text message field and I then click the Send arrow icon.…

Doesn't happen in portrait.
Anyone have any idea why this has started happening?
Android Samsung phone.
