Hi there. We're having a new side gate fitted in the next few days and I'd like to be ready to go with a varnish and/or stain to finish it. Ideally I'd like to really darken the wood but also protect it for as long as possible. What type of products should I be looking at?

    Thanks!

I think it is advised to leave the gate a few months to season and dry out before staining or painting.. Anyway we did a pressure treated gate about 4 years go and, on the advise of a paint specialist, we gave it two coats of Sikkens HLS Plus followed by a finish coat of Sikkens Filter 7 Plus. It has kept great - looks as good as new still, I think. We used teak but it comes in a variety of colours.

Ah thanks so much for that - I had no idea about leaving it to season!

We have pressure treated 60 mtr 4 rail fence, every year I put blackstain on it but I hate having to redo, was at a garden centre and seen theirs and they said they used the blackened oil from an oil change on any vehicle and it was painted 5yrs and looked like it had just been done. my husband kept oil for me since I'm gonna give it a try this year.

Waste oil from a diesel engine only I'd say, if it's black.

    Not your ornery onager
