Car engine firing cycle.

    Posting here as some of you all may be knowledgeable on my question.

    In an inline 4 cylinder engine (i4), am I correct that at any one time, each of the 4 cylinders is doing one of the 4 stages of running (intake, compression, power and exhaust)?

    If so, what's going on in a i6, are 2 cylinders idle for a portion of the rotation?
