NCT Failure Query

Hi

Does anyone know if a low oil level warning light is an NCT fail. The issue is not actually low oil but the sensor, its a BMW and a common issue but I have to drop the oil to change it and its just recently been done.

I would Imagine mightnt do Emissions test with that warning 🤔

I believe they will check the actual oil level if its diesel. If petrol it doesn’t matter

low oil level, pressure is fine, its not an unusual failure and the actual oil level is fine too…but no point turning up if tester going to be pedantic about it…

I'm guessing if I ring they will say it will fail, but talking to a sensible tester might be more useful…

You can’t really ring to ask these things. Consult the NCT manual. You might as well still do the test. It will probably fail on other things too if its an older car. I’m almost certain it won’t fail on that tho

Its another €100 if it fails…I might have to bite the bullet anyway but seems like a waste to change new oil just because of a sensor,

So direct from a tester…"This is no reason for a fail or non-test item, once oil is at correct level all ok"

What BMW is it, I presume old enough to have a dip stick, how else can they check on the new ones

Better to drop the sump and change the sensor.

If you've more than a few thousand miles on the oil, change it and the filter.

My Car failed because when wiping the dipstick clean, the flexible plastic end broke off in the testers hand.

Because they could not measure the oil level, they failed it

I think having any warning light illuminated on the dashboard would be a fail….. But a visual fail. The ole black tape over it might even get it passed.

My emissions light was on but they still passes it because the emissions were ok.

Hi all. Going to jump in on this thread as don't want to create a new one, hope OP doesn't mind.


So the car had its first NCT last week (2020 BMW 330e), and failed on a worn ball joint - the drivers side front. Also need a new 12v battery so going to get that replaced as well.

Got the following quote, anyone know if this price sounds reasonable?

The parts prices look ok (stop start battery's cost alot) but the labour for the battery is taking the piss and the lower arm is excessive. My mechanic wouldn't even charge me for tracking, it's essentially a step they have to do when replacing the lower arm anyway

Yeah, I wasn't expecting the estimation to be so high - I said I wanted OEM parts to be used, so was expecting the parts to be on the expensive side, but wasn't expecting the labour to be quite so high.

Apparently not. Thought it might be the case that it would be, but after talking with BMW they said that it's all one unfortunately.

Anyone have any recommendations for a decent mechanic in the Galway area that would be worth a shout?

I’m fairly certain I only pay like €50 to €80 labour for wishbone replacements.

I don’t pay any labour for battery replacements. But I think BMW batteries need coding? €300 seems expensive for a battery tho. I usually pay €160 or so for a stop/start battery but I understand a BMW battery may be more expensive.

I usually pay €30 for front wheel alignment. You don’t need all four wheels aligned after a wishbone change.

Also, do you really need an OEM wishbone?

They need to be coded but it's a 5 mins job with any half decent scanner , you don't need BMW specialist stuff

To be fair I understand them charging a fee to fit the battery and code it. The knowledge/equipment doesn’t pay for itself.

But €380 + VAT seems mad money to me.. Is the battery faulty or something? Otherwise why change it on a 4 year old car.

I asked for OEM parts as I don't want it to cause issues in the future. Do you reckon OEM control arm & battery are not needed in this case?

I wouldn't be fitting oem either. BMW don't make battery's so a battery from a respectable brand will be just as good and the control arm, I have never heard of anyone fitting an oem one to a car tbh, it's as basic a suspension part you can get

At that price I doubt that's an oem battery, it's too cheap. micks garage have one for 260 quid but they go up to 380 for Bosch so if it was oem I would be expecting it to cost 380-400 but I could be wrong

Tbh man this is absolutely basic stuff, any mechanic you will find anywhere can do this stuff with their eyes closed.
