Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to paint this stool that I made in secondary school (long time ago now!). Just asking for advice: is there a special type of paint I should buy?

Hi, yes you should prime it first then sand it back with 180 grit (as the grain may rise), and then use a good quality wood paint over that. The first coat will probably benefit from another sanding of 180 grit (always sanding with the grain), then finish it off with another coat.

A primer is a type of paint which will prepare the surface for the top layers of paint. I'm suggesting it here as some wood collects dust or grease or can be very absorbent (especially softer woods), so the primer helps to control that and allows you to sand it back to obtain a nice surface-finish. An undercoat would be a similar term for a primer in this case.
