Would be a non story if things were semi ok on the pitch but the optics are bad. You've already a paying public disillusioned with the team thinking they dont care. There are plenty of spots up for grabs in his team, As the current face of Irish football he should be getting out and about watching and meeting with players (current and potentially)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,851 ✭✭✭ShamNNspace

True he can do both, go to live matches and also use wyscout

That article is just saying he hasn't gone yet, and isn't changing that this weekend, and indeed that it was thought he'd be at the Brighton game (which would be odd to say if they also thought he'd never go to any games ever).

Seems people are mad to throw definitives at him asap without anything solid backup to it. Maybe we can calm down a little and just let the fella work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,522 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

He could end up going on a pubcrawl (all expenses paid) and having a gander of the website every so often

Sure there's an 'Icelandic expat group' in Dublin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,675 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

I've also never seen the word 'Optics' used to often. He's been hired to the job based on his track record of performance with small countries. I'd much rather we let him do what he's been hired to do, the way he sees fit based on his experience, and stop over-complicated things with pearl clutching about PR.

Some of the big boys in world football have been using it for years it seems. We are always accusing the FAI of being a backward organisation so maybe this is a step up technology wise. I don't see the issue.

He's had two games and you're already comparing to John Delaney?

Presumably with Casement Pk now not being built for the Euros , NI are no longer eligible for one of the host spots?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,423 ✭✭✭RoryMac

Seems to be the case, the British Government have qualified us for the Euros

You'd hope so, or at least if there's one spare and they haven't qualified then they might get it. But they shouldn't get one ahead of us, Wales, or Scotland if none qualify directly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,429 ✭✭✭topmanamillion

Based on the last two international fixtures, there aren't even 11 players who can play international football for us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,075 ✭✭✭ebbsy

I think there will be 2 spots held in reserve for the best ranked host nations that do not qualify.

    Might be wrong though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,093 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Will Smallbone misses today due to a tight hamstring.

I thought the same so now if say Eng & Scotland qualify, then Ire & Wales would automatically get the two host spots as NI are no longer a host

I wouldn’t diss him over following the players on that website.

Just once we go back to what I call the core Irish style - put ‘em under pressure - long balls, high line, work like dogs to Harry and harass the opposition - this is what we need to get back to.

Whatever about the English we should not be losing to the likes of Greece or the mid tier teams - we are just as good if we can get back to our core style and make Dublin a place to be feared when the opposition have to come here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,093 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Hopefully Umeh finally gets some minutes today. He's the type of player we need coming through especially if three at the back will remain an option and Palace play him at WB.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,093 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Also good to see Tayo Adaramola go straight into the starting XI for Stockport on his return from injury. Stockport have started the L1 season unbeaten after winning L2.

Another option for LB/LWB. Has the athleticism and pace needed to play both roles. Pity he's only a few weeks overage to play U21s again next campaign. But if he can impress for a team who'll be challenging for L1 you'd hope he'd be pushing for our senior squad this season given our issues at LB.

Kepa not allowed play against Chelsea so Travers gets a start tonight in the league. Likely to start mid weeks EFL cup game too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,093 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Just like a bus, you wait around for your first goal of the season and bam you've just scored four goals in one match. Still 30mins to go for Troy to add more goals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 600 ✭✭✭maximus15

Would like to think he may see some minutes next international window. Stupid he didn't in last 2 games

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 397 ✭✭square ball

Fine finishes too. Woeful defending. A bit of form and confidence in front of goal won't do him any harm. Most of our attackers struggling for game time or form.

He's still eligible for the Ireland under 21's so plenty time on his side.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,664 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

Any manager who thinks Troy is not one of Ireland's two best attacking options at the moment is not doing their job properly. End of discussion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,768 ✭✭✭The Rooster

But for a bit of context, that was 4 goals in a 9-1 win. And Troy had failed to score in the opening 4 games of the season.
He’s playing in a good team (in the context of the Eredvisie) but he hadn’t done a whole lot prior to the international break to warrant him jumping ahead of others.

However, I’m sure he’ll really kick on from here. That puts him joint leading scorer in the league and IMO he’s clearly a better player than Idah.

Also it's not like picking the most potent attackers at any given time is the best thing to do anyway… that's very simplistic. If you're gonna try to hit a team on the break then a guy in good goalscoring form but with no pace isn't of much use.

I'd have liked to try Troy against Greece alright, playing in a 2 up front off Szmodics. The best we've looked in the past five years was with the partnership of Troy and Obafemi. Now, a bigger part of that was Obafemi's brilliance in an Ireland shirt, but Troy was a good foil for him - even if Troy did miss some absolutely crucial sitters that Oba put on a plate for him - but his finishing seems to have improved since then. With a clever partner like Szmodics you could see Troy doing well alright.

For this last window, since we only really played 1 up with two wider players in the first game, and an extra midfielder in the second game, he'd not have been a good fit.

Wolves just got the full Matt Doherty can’t be arsed to defend treatment…..costly.

Let's hope HH was taking notes from wysescout or whatever it's called.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,093 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Anytime I see Matt Dohertys name mentioned it always reminds me of his absolute pathetic attempt of defending the first goal in the 2-1 lose away to Scotland in 2022.

The plight of our international teams can only get worse following the decision of the FAI to discontinue the Emerging Talent Programme due to lack of funding. This decision will severely hamper the grassroots side of football and will severely impact on the quality of players for future Ireland teams. It's been a regular topic that we need to invest more in grassroot football in order to improve the quality of players on their path to representing their country. This decision is a backward step. I know they are making the decision based on lack of funding and advocated that we, the football community raise the question of funding when politicians call to our doors in the coming General election campaign. This is a very simplistic approach, they should be more proactive in seeking funding, their cut from betting tax is the target at the moment, in seeking more. Yet we have pledged €50M funding to casement park in NI. Can't help feeling that FAI could do with spending money on hiring a "Funding specialist " as they seem lacking in that area, always the poor relations when compared to GAA, Rugby, Horse racing and even Greyhound racing ?

Sad state of affairs, just to add I have seen at first hand the ETP in operation. One of my grandsons is on his third year of attending one of the centres and I have witnessed the great work by the coaching staff over the last 2 years and see the kids developing into better players . I doubt these coaches are on huge salaries.

It certainly doesnt help when the CEO is spending his time explaining why he got a 12k payment in lieu of holidays when he should be making a case for further FAI funding.

It could be a strategic move to withdraw the funding now; some of Apple money is going to be up for grabs over the coming months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,224 ✭✭✭bren2001

can’t see any of the parties pledging money to the FAI. Unlikely to win any votes based on that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,924 ✭✭✭orangerhyme

Troy is our only striker playing at a decent level so has to start.

Scmodics is more of a number 10.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,622 ✭✭✭Ferris_Bueller

Scales scores a header to put Celtic 1-0 up in the Champions League. Last Irishman to score in the Champions League: Darron Gibson in 2011.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,543 ✭✭✭glenjamin

John Patrick of Getafe back with the first team. He's made two appearances so far this season from the bench (albeit only for a combined 6 minutes). Unused sub tonight against Betis, but good to see his name again.

    Anyone watching Ferguson for Brighton?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,722 ✭✭✭DJIMI TRARORE

Idah at the death, Ferguson lasted a little over an hour

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,696 ✭✭✭ForestFire

Idah, score to make it 5….

Last Irishman to score in the Champions League: ……..oh……… Scales 80mins ago….😃

    You are correct sir

Jonjoe Kenny playing very well for Hertha so far this season. Has he ever been approached about playing for Ireland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,676 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

Two goals in a minute and top class finishes from Adam Idah. I didn’t realise how good a finisher he is. When the Celtic manager put on his first pick attacking players the quality service gave Adam his chances and he took them excellently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,768 ✭✭✭The Rooster

Good to see him scoring. Even if against the mighty Falkirk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,728 ✭✭✭pgj2015

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,562 ✭✭✭Acosta

It's decent for a second division. The attendances are around the same as La Liga. Lots of big teams down there at the moment. Hamburg, Schalke, Koln, Hertha. Sky Sports have two or three games a week live on their YouTube channel

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,676 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

They were good finishes and the pressure was on him as Celtic were behind at the time to Falkirk. He scored in the Champions League last week as well.

I think the Ireland manager and his management team should be looking at ways to get Idah decent service.

He’ll score. He knows where the net is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,768 ✭✭✭The Rooster

    They were good finishes???

The first one was a 2 yard tap-in to an empty net !
    Stunning!

Great that he’s scoring, but it’s fecking Falkirk. Hopefully he can get into the Celtic starting team. And the next time he plays for Ireland, hopefully he shows a massive improvement from the dross he served up last time.

I see Ireland have dropped 4 places to 62nd in the world rankings this week. Don’t see is moving up the rankings anytime soon.

    P.
