Taxation of farmland

I read that this is coming down the tracks. It's a Fianna Fail proposal. This would cause a lot of hardship, especially to small farms. This is the norm in the USA.

I'd imagine it'll be a tax on land rental or some such. It'll hardly be blanket on all farmers as it would finish the industry and all of the spin off employment.

It's to do with the Residential Zoned Land Tax. All residential zoned land is subject to this tax atm and it's pulling in a lot of farmers with land at the edge of towns. Of course they've made an absolute mess of the implementation.

Can they zone land for development without consulting land owners or does it still require a brown envelope

Zoning can occur without consultation of landowners.

I'd have thought anyone whose land was zoned for development would be laughing all the way to the bank.

Not true… 3% tax on your rezoned lands.

Not all land can be developed.

Thats a problem if you are still farming, and no option to sell or develop the land.

Not if they don't want to sell it and there's a tax on the land also.
