District court questions

My son (19) is Up in district court this week for theft, carrying an angle grinder and property damage. Never been to court before and we are both worried. Can anyone help as to what we can expect there? Does he need a solicitor? Obviously he admit he did it and regrets it a lot but how can he get through the court date? Have no idea what to do or procedure.

Definitely get a solicitor.

Try not to worry about it too much. He will definitely need a solicitor.

If its your sons 1st time offence , he will probably get the probation act.

Good communication from your solicitor with the Garda who charged him is of vital importance also.

This is not the end of the world, but there are implications. Having an angle grinder (without good reason) would suggests a level of premeditation.

Angle grinder is a frequent tool for bike thieves, which is an awful scummy crime.

Go to the District Court in question a few times in the days and weeks before the first day in. get to know the legal aid solicitors and approach one of them to take on the case.
