I agree with this, but sometimes posters will refuse to accept an answer or will shift the goalposts slightly to ask another question.

If someone won't engage or answer a question you can generally take it that they can't defend their position, and that doing so will show them up, and leave them to it.

Some posters will continuously ask questions to try and deflect from a certain issue.

    Its a tactic of deflection.

Ask for proof, proof is provided then the reply is often oh thats a biased source, when in fact any one of 50 sources could be provided.

Or else they will ask another question and keep going until eventually they think they have spotted some weakness in the defence.

This small victory is then painted as a basis for disproving all the previous valid arguments won by the poster asked questions.

Watch this thread kick off quicker than the fire reported.

Another clickbait thread title with nothing in the article to suggest the building was to be used as an IPAS site.

Hope this is the kind of pattern of posting style the mods wanted highlighted?

It's a popular thread. Boards wants people to use it. You do understand that?

Proof is requested then provided but then it's not the correct type of proof and then the discussion is shut down.

Some of the claims made by people on this thread over the years that are based on nothing but their own opinions is mind boggling yet the same people are here demanding that verifiable facts are required to meet their standards of debate, the same people engage in the same behaviour mentioned above (not the correct type of proof being provided) and then they wonder why people aren't falling over themselves to do things the way they want them done.

This site has had years of being dicked around by these users, taking things others have said out of context, inserting narratives into discussions that have no place there, gaslighting, posting ad homenim crap to bait people into pointless arguments that derail threads and drive users away from the site.

Here they are in feedback, first of all demanding that opinions they don't like be removed by banning people they don't agree with then when that isn't actioned they demand those people be held to a higher standard than they hold themselves to.

None of this is feedback, it's bellyaching and whinging. For every post on this thread with a good feedback suggestion there's a page of bickering and waffle.

The fact that nobody is owed a reply has been pointed out over and over, unless someone is posting with the intention of being a nuisance we all just have to accept that our requests or demands can fall on deaf ears and there's nothing we can do about it.

It's a popular thread due to the nature of how you started it. You do understand that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,553 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

Yes. People are chatting about it. Boards needs users to survive and thrive. Are you that sensitive you want to see a rather tame thread closed down?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,181 ✭✭✭✭Ha Long Bay

Not sensitive at all but thanks for asking. I do not enjoy watching fake news being promoted on this site and as part of this feedback thread it's what is not helping the site.

Nothing of the sort. It's an Irish site which gets Irish people talking when big things happen here. The refugee fire issue is going on for months and months. Nothing fake about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,010 ✭✭✭✭anewme

Why are you saying it is an IPAS site, with absolutely no confirmation.

You need to take ownership for spreading fake news here.

    RTE updated their article,

Shannon Homes Dublin had plans to demolish it and build a large residential development at Taylor's Lane in Ballyboden.

The company is looking to construct more than 400 apartments on the site.

    https://www.rte.ie/news/dublin/2024/0820/1465935-dublin-fire/

It looks like local rumours and conjecture about the site being used for IPAS accommodation prompted arson.

ETA - that thread should be updated.

"The refugee fire issue is going on for months and months."

Not helped by people spreading fake news across social media platforms.

Again feedback, a thread started like that tonight is just dangerous and should not be allowed on this site in the way it was presented.

What part of you falsely claiming this was an IPA centre don't you get?

The games forum could do with a reboot alright, maybe a game, a werewolf game, the vanilla boards werewolf game, mods as wolves 😁 all play anon

The main thing I am getting from this thread is some people want safe spaces for opinions mascerading as facts.

    No.

And to be able to spread scurrilous rumours, rumours which could have consequences for people in Ireland, by linking to a garbage Twitter account or some other unreliable source online rather than any sort of reputable news organisation.

These can lead to defamatory remarks being made on the threads.

If boards don't have the mods to "fact check" or subject these to some sort of basic oversight, only a matter of time before it hits some legal trouble.

Mod factchecking sounds beyond reach but, maybe, users can report something they’ve factchecked, themselves, and “show their work” when they do?

Yes anyone who gets outraged at having to provide a source/link for outlandish claims are just stirring/trolling. That should never be allowed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,650 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Yes and also clearer standards for sources. I don't mean the mods should spend time themselves doing detailed fact checking as such, but if they see a post, or are looking at a report, they can quickly see what the supporting source is, or if there is one. Basic oversight.

I agree with both of these points.

On the factchecking, there's no way that mods are going to have time for that. Usually, anyone spreading misinformation or disinformation is going to be posting in a toxic manner anyway so they'll usually end up spouting overt racism, hate, or just abuse other posters when their ideology gets questioned.

As a mod, it's incredibly tedious here the same people bleat about bias upon every inconvenience or any decision they don't like. I remember one poster in Politics who just couldn't stay civil respond to an infraction with assurances that they were a Clinton supporter, as if that mattered.

The second you propose banning fake news outlets like GB News or gript, you'll have the same people spouting the same nonsense again and nothing will change.

Looking through your posting history and there's a lot of opinions masquerading as facts. You just post them in threads where lots of people agree with you.

Perhaps consider getting your own house in order before you start launching an offensive against others.

Fine but aren't you missing a salient point. Who gets to decide whether the moon is made of cheese or not??

I can think of several threads here where your analogy about Group A & cheese holds but those continually voicing this are allowed to carry on infinitum it seems. Where Group B challenges the idea and are run off.

So what happens in these instances is that the moderator(s) decide that Group As theory re is correct and aligns with this. There's your problem.

Another analogy might be a referee in rugby who decides early days that Scrum A has the better of Scrum B and awards scrum penalties continually against Scrum B. But analysis from other refs observing the game and close up video shows in fact that Scrum A are scrummaging illegally and codding the referee.

I'm not sure you that we can accept reporting from RTE on such matters to be wholly accurate. It's very noticeable in relation to these issues that they shape their reporting to align with government policy. By reporting some stories or angles on them and ignoring other stories/ angles. So perhaps one should suspend one's judgment for the moment. Therein lies the problem of fact checking. One persons fact is anothers fiction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,650 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

"A lie will fly around the whole world while the truth is getting its boots on."

While RTE reporting may not be wholly accurate, and any news org can show bias in what stories they choose to report on, RTE has to adhere to legal standards etc

There's no serious comparison between the type of scurrilous rumours, lies and drivel being peddled on random Twitter accounts and the content on RTE.

Suspending one's judgment would mean allowing all sorts of scurrilous rumours to be peddled.
Very often it will send thread down rat holes unnecessarily, may lead to legally dodgy posts.
This is a discussion site, there's nothing to be gained from 'jumping the gun' on such matters.

The relatively free-form nature of forum thread OPs is probably what doesn't help.

I presume there isn't a system available in Vanilla to require all OPs in certain forums to follow a specific template for submission? Y'know, like the content controls and AutoMod we have on Reddit.

Then surely it could be refuted with an alternative source?

At the time I posted a thread here stated as fact that it was a proposed site for IPAS accommodation, there was no link or source to verify this. RTE said the owner was trying to get planning permission for apartments, a poster on the thread said the same. If that's incorrect can it be verified?

There are often local rumours about empty buildings, I've seen local representatives refute these on social media and local sites. It is possible this fire was started on the basis of incorrect motives.

The thread could still discuss the impact of all of this but correct any misleading claims.
