Late night walk and heard an animal hissing

from a bush that I was right beside. Rural and quiet area. The hiss wasn’t as long, as loud or as forceful as a normal hiss from a cat but quieter and shorter.

Was this likely a cat or possibly some other animal?

Probably a cat.

I have one cat who has a very loud "voice" and another who is so quiett you have to really strain to hear any sounds she makes.

Possibly a Pine Marten, are they in the area ?

They can make a hissing sound and also growl.

Not sure if there are Pine Martens but I saw a mink nearby only a few weeks ago. That’s the first time in 7/8 years I’ve seen a mink.

I've had Hedgehog hiss at me. It was quite a surprise when I eventually got my eyes on the source. Right at my feet but hidden in long grass.
