    hello

    i have a dad ages 68 and he needs a nursing home , how does one go about getting a nursing home these days do you have to be referred by the GP or can you just ring up and enquire?

    You ring up and enquire, basically - there's not always spaces available where you want, and for the right type of care either (not all nursing homes can handle all needs). But if you want the state to help pay for it, there is a process to have care needs assessed:

    Only had to be tangentially involved in this for a grandparent and its not a fun process, neither is finding the actual home although we got a top notch one in the end; by luck more than anything else.

    Looking at your post history - does he actually want to go to a home? It isn't possible to just force someone in; that is where the GP is needed to start a process that could end up in the courts.

    I agree with L1011. Does he want to go into a nursing home. If not it's very selfish to consider one. Can he not get home help instead if your unwilling to look after him.
