Hey! I've got a storage area underneath my stairs but it has no light in it. I'd like to install some lights there.

    Here's an illustration:

(the red light is the storage light, green is the closest electrical socket, blue is the hallway ceiling light)

    Is any of this legal?

You could just install motion activated battery powered lights, way less hassle and expense. Loads of different types available.

    This!

I got a stick-up tube light for my shed where I store the bike, took 2 mins to install and is fantastic.

Is there anything you can point out that works well for this case? I have found several, but not sure if they work.

I've got a couple of these Xiaomi motion activated lights, really good light off them, they can be angled when fitted to face nearly any direction.

What did you end up doing? I've had these rechargable lights in our storage room under the stairs for 5 years now and I'm fead up with it! We access the storage several times a day as that's where we hang our coats so the lights don't even last 2 weeks before needing to be recharged. When we first moved in I asked the electrician and he said it was not easy because it would also require installing a smoke detector connected to the rest of the smoke detectors in the house.

I'm a proficient DIYer and I've been tempted several times to just install a light myself, but don't want to break regulations either. Recently it occurred to me that I could install some low voltage LEDs and perhaps that wouldn't break regulations because it's not electrician work?

The idea I have is to drill a hole through the wall which leads to the sitting room on one side or to utility room on the other side, have the 220v AC to 12v DC transformer on there (outside storage room) and feed the 12v wires through the wall, install a 12v motion sensor near the entrance to the storage room and install a few LED lights feeding from the 12v.
Does anyone know if this is ok or will something like this also go against regulations?
