Irish Olympic hopefuls for LA '28

Following the success of Paris Olympics, I'm starting a thread of young athletes who have potential to do well in LA '28.

I think it would be interesting to follow their progress over the next 4 years.

I'm not including high profile athletes whom we are already aware of like Daniel Wiffen or ones who most likely will be retired like Ciara Mageean.

John Shortt

17 year old swimmer from Galway.

Won gold in European Juniors in 200m backstroke.

Set senior Irish record in 200m backstroke.

Thomas Williams

16 year old hammer thrower from Cavan.

Won gold in European under 18s this year.

One of only 3 Irish athletes to win gold in European U18. Only male I think.

Ranked number 1 in the world under 18s.

Elizabeth Ndudi

19 year old long jumper.

Won gold in European under 20 in 2023.

Holds Irish record.

Reece Ademola

21 year old long jumper from Cork.

Finished 5th in Worlds U20 in 2022.

6'9" tall so probably needs time to grow into his frame.

20 year old hammer thrower from Cork.

Youngest hammer thrower in Paris Olympics

Nick Griggs

19 year old middle distance runner from Tyrone.

Won gold Euro U20 in '21 3000m at age of 16.

Won silver 3000m in '23.

17 year old 400m runner from Derry

Won bronze in European U18 this year.

Jake Passmore

19 year old diver from Bradford, England but competes for Ireland through grandparent.

Won silver in World junior diving championship '22.

Won bronze in Euro juniors '22

Eve McMahon

20 year old sailor from Dublin.

Won a ‘triple crown’ of major youth titles (two Worlds and one European) in 2022.

Lucy Bénézet Minns

18 year old cyclist. Born in Dublin to French mother and Canadian father but grew up in London. Competes for Ireland.

Won gold in Under 23 UEC Track European Championships in the Junior Women Points Race this year.
