It seems he was on duty at the time but was doing some personal shopping.

Luckily a member of staff in the shop found the gun.

Not the first time this has happened. There was another incident where a machine gun was left on the roof of the car.

I remember that a few years ago, machine gun left on roof on car and fell off in the north inner city without Gardai even noticing. Again they were lucky an honest member of the public found it and handed it in.

Imagine if it was the same Garda, wouldn't even surprise me.

It wasn't left on the roof of a car, the Garda Ombudsman found the boot opened on an incline and it fell out.

I remember it was around the time of the gangland shooting in Avondale house flats in the north inner city. Remember Enda Kenny going for a walkabout in the area after the shooting and promising a task force to make things better. Did that ever happen?

I don't believe a word of that either. For the boot of a high end Audi to just open like that, and then for a heavy gun to jump out? A bag of balloons maybe, but not a firearm.

It wasn't found on the north side, it was found outside Harcourt Square where the armed units were based at the time.

Story is a bit weird all right but it was a machine pistol(mp7) 1.9kg so only a bit more weight and size than a regular pistol.

During one of W Bush’s visits to Ireland he stayed in Clare and loads of cops were on duty and staying in local hotels. I was a member of the gym in one and was getting changed after a session and got chatting to one of them who had been in for a swim, he opened the door of the locker and showed me a revolver which he had left in during his swim. He was a nice guy but I was surprised he left it in a gym locker with such a flimsy lock on it.

That is potentially a fatal mistake he made. The punishment should be severe. Remove his rank and having him doing desk work for the rest of his career. That at a minimun. Really it should be dismissal.
