Anti-Theft GPS locator for e-bike

Got my son a new e-bike. Last one was stolen from school last year.

Have a good lock but also want to be a GPS locator, so that I can track it if it’s solution.

Bluffing here a little as don’t fully know what the gadget is called. I’ve searched some Dublin bike stores online but not seeing much.

Can anyone point min the right direction?

I’ve just googled the AirTag. When tracking it do they make noise or is it silent.

Hopefully it’s silent. Otherwise potential thief can just find and remove it before we can track it.

An AirTag will beep at random intervals if it doesn’t detect your phone nearby after about ~8 hours.
If the thief has an iPhone they will get a notification that an AirTag is following them too.
This came in from a software update to deter their use for stalking.

It does mean though that a wannabie thief will hear the beeping if they have the bike taken from you for longer than ~8 hours.
However, I would suspect most people would notice it robbed at that stage and see the thief’s house?
If not, there are guides on how to drill a small hole in them to disable the speaker.
This won’t stop them getting a notification that an AirTag following them if they have an iPhone, but I think we are giving too much credit to the awareness of the thief.

Don't get a tile, they are absolutely useless.

I use airtags and find they work well. I have about 8 of them on various things, including a couple of bikes. Got cheap waterproof enclosures for them, with 3m sticker attached. Not tiny, but I can hide them on the bikes I use them on.

Thanks. Was chatting with someone in the local bike shop about the air tag.
They said it beeps so thief will hear it so they said to hide it in the frame so thief can’t get at it.

Don’t know how that would work if I needed to put a new battery on the AirTag as won’t it be difficult for me to get at?

You won’t have to change the battery that often.
I’d imagine it’s too big to hide inside a frame to be honest.
You can disable the beep manually, I just haven’t got around to doing it myself.

An airtag probably wont work deep in a bike frame as it will act as a farady cage.

Ive seen a few good ideas of where people hide them.

Ive 3D printed a hidden holder in the drinks bottle cage for my road bike, similar to below:

Muc Off sell a holder for hiding them in the tyre.

There are a good few locations to try. The battery lasts about a year.
