VRT Exemption

Next year I am moving to the UK with work for 6 months. I am thinking of purchasing a car and insuring it over there for the duration of the work.

I was looking into the requirements for VRT exemption through a transfer of residence to potentially bring the car back with me when I return. I would own the car for more than 6 months and the UK would be my primary place of residence as I would be there for more than 185 days of the calendar year.

The only problem I have is with

“ You do not qualify if:

    • you have been abroad on a task of any definite duration“

My contract doesn’t specify that my work in the UK is for 6 months. In this case would stating I was returning to a position in Ireland be enough for revenue? Am I wasting my time looking into this or is it possible in my circumstances?

It all depends on Revenue's definition of 'residence'.

    Not your ornery onager

    Hi there,

From my reading of the Revenue's "Moving to live in Ireland from outside the EU" information section, not only will your criteria meet the requirements for VRT exemption; you 'may' also be exempt from Customs Duty and VAT.

Also, it just so happens that I will have my car for sale from next January; if you would be interested. It's a 7-seater, 2014 Mazda 8 MPV 2.3 petrol auto, with a NI registration plate and mileage is in kilometres, and currently 54,800km.
