Do employers check whether current or prospective employees are directors at a company?

Curious if this is something HR would ever engage in, would being a director of a small company or side create issues.

I'm aware that employment contracts often call this out as something that needs to be approved. But do they actually comb through the CRO , probably not?

That depends on how good the employer's HR dept is, and what sector it operates in. Declare the director role at the outset, explain it, log it. If it unimportant, it won't be an issue. If it is hidden and discoveredlater it is a clear breach of trust/honesty and also of the employment contract and a firing offence.

For most companies this would not be an issue as long as there was no conflict of interest.

You definitely should declare it if asked - why would you not?

It depends on the sector, company and role. I've been forensically background checked for two roles previously and it 100% would have been discovered in those circumstances. For most "bog standard" corporate roles, it's probably not checked, tbh, but it's a judgement call whether or not you disclose, or hide otand deal with the potential consequences if they do find out.
