At least one third of the €500 bond would need to be physically handed over to the court. It will be refunded if the accused sticks to their bail conditions at the end of the case.

The €3000 independent surety does not need to be handed over. The person putting that up (usually a family member) needs to sign an agreement that they’ll pay it if bail conditions are not met. Basically, they’re taking responsibility for making sure the accused sticks to their bail conditions and shows up for court. The court looks for evidence that they are in a position to pay it if necessary. There are restrictions on who can put up the surety (for instance, people with previous convictions or who have previously been declared bankrupt can’t).

In this case, it doesn’t look like anyone actually put up the €3,000 surety yet, as the accused was remanded in custody even though bail was granted. The article doesn’t say if any of the bond was handed over.

Thread closed - I am leaving it up rather than delete it entirely because post #2 is actually helpful
