Bicycle Repair tools for an Orbea Aqua Racer, Circa 2003

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has a bicycle like this and if so , what type of tools do I need to do repairs such as removing the bottom bracket and sprocket cartridge from the rear wheel… Many Thanks. By the way, I've no intention of bringing this to be repaired. Quite capable myself as I used to do this but just not these newer types….

The tools you would have previously used to work on brakes, cables etc. I would imagine haven't changed much. The sprocket cartridge is most likely a cassette on your bike. You'll want something like below, paired with a chain whip

If you take a photo of the bottom bracket, it will be easier to say what tool you need

Thanks a million for that. I've been gradually re-educating myself on all this. Its my Sons bicycle I'm fixing while hes away. Hes a pic of the bottom bracket. You're right about the cassette. I think I need a new wheel though as there's a bit of play in it. Don't fancy changing bearings…I believe they are pressed in, correct me if i'm wrong.

I believe the wheel is a 622x15C which seems to translate to a 700C apparently ….Think I need this

Anyway, theres a couple of pics of the bottom bracket…I have the shank remover but don't have the tool for taking off that plastic screw on the crank arm…in the middle…

Thats a pre load cap, here's the tool to remove it, but there's generic ones all over the internet.

When you say you have a shank remover, what do you mean?

Once you loosen the bolt at the top of the crank arm (the one that goes through laterally, as such) the crank arm will come off the spindle, and then the drive crank and rings will slide out of the bottom bracket.

You'll then need a tool to remove the bottom bracket

Thanks again for that. I really appreciate it. Its helping a lot. I see about the little gadget for taking out the cap.

Sorry i probably thought that this type of bottom bracket needed a device to pull out the crank arms etc. I needed one on a mountain bike. Different again….

You mentioned the nuts or screws keeping the crank arms in. I see there are 2. One I got out ok, it was actually loose, the other one seems like someone was at it before, might have some difficulty with it. The head is rung a little. My need to come up with a plan to remove it.

Have you ever been into Decathlon to buy any bicycle stuff, would they be recommended or what do you think?

if the allen bolt is spinning, it shouldn't be compressing, so that in itself shouldn't be holding the arm on.

are you near decathlon? there's a decent bike shop not that far away, humphries. they won't be able to compete with decathlon on price though.

In terms of removing the bolt, first thing I'd try is to hammer is a Torx bit that's one size too big for the allen head of the bolt.

Otherwise, you might have to be prepared to drill it out.

In terms of the bottom bracket, a tool like this is what you want

Essentially, the cups either side of the bb hols the bearings outboard of the frame.

Regarding Decathlon, it depends what you're looking to buy.

I have some of the cheaper clothing, it's grand, but there are companies that do it much better (albeit for more money).

My wife bought one of their smart turbo trainers, it seems like an excellent piece of kit.

For tools, I don't own any Decathlon brand tools, but I'm sure the ones I linked to are fine. They're fairly generic tools, so most bike shops, and a near infinite number of websites, will sell similar

The tools , thanks a lot for that information too. My knowledge of what I don't need is going up!!!

I was only asking re: decathlon regarding a back wheel for the bicycle. I'll post a pic of what I have currently.

This is a picture detailing the information on the rim. This bicycle doesn't have disk breaks but the other caliper type, rim breaks, whatever the term is for them. Its a 9 speed cassette too

I've no experience of their wheels, to be honest. Local bike shop, if it's any good, might be the best place to start
