Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Solar installation DIY

    Hi guys,

I’m a qualified electrician looking to do a solar PV installation myself. Our house has a decent sized roof and the orientation is east/west. I’d be looking at putting up as many panels as possible. If I put in 10kw if panels what would be the best inverter to work with this? I’m aware of the 5kw 25a inverter limit. Thanks in advance.

Hi! Two factors to look at: inverters usually have dual MPPT inputs which have min/max voltage limits. Look for the specific panel Vmpp and add up each string so that it's just under the MPPT input voltage. Play around with those numbers across different panel vendors and use it to maximise the Wpp (peak solar wattage) against the input voltage.

Look here for examples of Vmpp:

    Good info on DC oversizing:

In terms of inverter: A hybrid type which can take a battery so that you can maximise the over-production. Look for an inverter which can take 48v DC batteries as there are newer types which limit you to much higher voltages and also create a vendor-lock-in.

Thank you very much for the advice. Is there any particular brand of inverter you would recommend for DC oversizing? Thanks again.

They all support oversizing. Have a look at the main thread and you'll find lots more info and ask what the preferred inverter is there.
