Barriers & Gates for new slatted shed

I’m building a 5 bay shed at the moment, probably be used for contract rearing. I was thinking of 2 head lock barriers, 2 latched barriers and 1 fixed, 2 double drinkers and one single, all 5 bar gates dividing the bays, I’d be interested to know if the above is suitable or if anyone has a different set up which they find works better. Also if anyone has any recommendations for companies (or more importantly ones to avoid) for the above gates & barriers that’d be great.

Don't get head locking barriers, the greatest waste of money and space ever. You can only feed 7 bullock for each bay as opposed to 8 or 9 with the diagonal ones. You'll never use it either, and they'll be banging and rattling all day. Did I mention that I hate the cu^ts.

I have some Gibney Steel barriers and dividing gates here. I got them because they were available at the local merchants. I'm very happy with them, so just another company to recommend.

I wouldn’t go head locking either. I can recommend condron stuff as I’ve started dealing with them the last few years and there stuff is top notch. I personally like the tombstone type barriers.

What ever barriers you do get make sure you get the heavy 76mm tubing ones and not the 60mm its abit extra but its money well spend. Mu barriers only have 9 head spaces which is fine but I think most have 10.

yes I’ve seen one burst in half recently by heifers, barrier was only 7 years old and one of the brands mentioned above

I have as well I know someone that bought two to replace 2 of there 25year old barriers and bought these because they where cheap at the time obvious why. I seem cows get in the middle and push they out almost 18inch of so they will fatigue in no time and 100 euro more could have got the heavier from the same company and it would probably last 30 years. they are probably made for people with only small stock

+1 on this 60mm is only fit for weanlings imo

76mm covers you on all grades of cattle if your system changes down the line

And don't be like myself, I welded them in between the rails. Which is fine until you have an animal down or you need to lift something over.

might go with timber, in 2 minds really, was going to go with condon but I’ve seen another one which has a wheel and sheeted on one side of the timber. Of course the lad selling the condon one tells me there’s no need of the wheel and that the sheeting causes the timber to rot faster somehow

I’m surprised to hear about the headlocks, 2 lads that I know are sorry they didn’t put in more of them, I might just cut it down to 1 head lock barrier, 2 might be a bit excessive anyway

They seem to add a lot of money onto the barriers when the timbers are added. Seems better value to just buy the timbers and separate. The way I have is the barrier opens and the cattle step across the timbers works fine although people say it’s dangerous but I have never had an issue. You can also buy the bracket from gibney and it hangs down over the barrier and you can bolt the timbers into it and then it will all swings together. This would probably still be cheaper than the full assembly. What part of the country are you in ? Would like to see the barrier you on about with the wheel

I would like to add one of these to each side of my shed and would make it handy for me to dose or anyway could just move them up one pen at a time.

all the barriers here are condons. Ranging from 3 to 20 years old. Not one of them have split abd all are the 60 mm ones. Those ones you’re talking about must be the ones the tinkers are selling ?

I never said they split I said they are likely to fatigue with all the stress and strain on them for being pushed by bigger stock. They are not from tinkers they are condron's just making the point that its better to go with the 76mm over the 60mm condon's would tell you that themselves.

When I was getting barriers I was tempted to get the 76mm ones, but the lad in the merchants told me they were too heavy for the pins if you are opening and closing the barrier to get cattle in and out. Maybe it was only his opinion, I don't know, but I went with the 60mm, and they've been perfectly fine.

I was talking about one that’s burst in half, it’s Condons and was installed in 2016/2017, there were 18 month old heifers in the pen when they burst it, top bar completely burst in half, saw it myself as it’s a yard I’d be in fairly often

dairy cows using ours here and they’d be pretty heavy too. Ordered 11 60 mm condon ones for a new tank this morning

Work away with one headlock at least. I like the Jourdain IV ones that Teemore sell. They're twice the price of normal barriers but one plus is with bales I've noticed less silage getting through them. At contract rearing though you'd want to be specific on whether you want the normal or heifer variety. Heifer will allow more obviously

I bought the standard barriers I think they were Teemore from Kenneth Boohan in Croom. Had an issue with one where one of the diagonals burst out when they were new he replaced it. They are there 16 years now you could bolt or or pin them on like gates. On the diagonal feedbarrier inside the shed we welded one side as the adjustable bolts kept slipping when they were open. We do not tighten the adjustable bolt on the other side as they now can act like gates.

I split the two bar gates at the back of the pens as its handy for getting cattle out of a pen. I woukd not be into bells and whistles.
