As a vaper and a retailer of vaping products myself, i am still glad to see this going to cabinet. These things have become an environmental disaster and the ban should bring people back to the non throwaway versions.

What's the story with flavoured vapes? Are they being banned too

I've been mixing my own for nearly 10 years - will I still be able to get flavours for them?

That got mentioned in the news report and just got tacked on as the last line which made me worried. The news report on NewsTalk said it was a ban on "at till" advertising of flavoured vapes which target kids.

I'll be honest Ive never noticed any at till advertising. I only go to a brick and mortar shop to buy vape juice and its only specific shops which I know have my juice and its always behind the till.

The first news report made me worried, Im not worried now.

Edit: OK, Im worried again, in the report just now "Flavoured nicotine is also due to be banned".

I'm all for the single use ones being banned, but I vape with a rechargeable mod and use mostly cherry flavoured liquid. If I have to order online I will, but I dont see how they will police it. It would surely need a cross border agreement which I dont see happening any time soon. Let me ask a rhetorical question, has this been fully thought out?

On the news now with a clip from the Minister, yes they are banning flavours.

Fuc*** pr1ck. He's lost my vote and I will be telling him why.

They are banning flavoured disposable vapes, not bottles of flavoured juice afaik

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,325 ✭✭✭✭rob316

They are banning all single use disposables and putting the legislation in place to ban certain flavours.

It's the same as what the UK propose, it'll leave mint, menthol, tobacco and fruit flavour liquids.

The focus of a flavour ban would be banning what they call child friendly flavours, like candyfloss, bubblegum, fizzy cola bottles etc.

There was a clip of the minister speaking and him saying there would be one flavour allowed.

How will they police people, like me most likely, ordering them online and getting them shipped from abroad?

Is this another law we will have but not enforced?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,325 ✭✭✭✭rob316

No he said, they will start with 1 flavour and then the sitting minister can expand on the ban then. They need working legislation to ban a flavour first. Media will go with the headline "flavour ban" but its more a restriction on flavours.

Same way they police everything else coming from abroad. I mean, why don't Irish people order fireworks from the UK online.

I'm sure you'll have no issues buying online most of the time, but the ban will put many off.

I suppose the Irish govt may prohibit or monitor cross-border sales and then let customs and anpost deal with confiscating them.

No doubt there will be some additional tax in budget for non disposable vape liquids also.

The disposable vapes are like crack sticks. More addictive even than smoking. Terrible for young people.

Its the government fault, a proper enforced under 18 ban should of been in place years ago, not just this year. Real case of closing the gate after the horse has bolted. Most legit shops have always been over 18 only, but they allowed all these endless amount of shops pop up and operate without any regulation.

I was wrong it's a full flavour ban except for tobacco, absolute disaster and far too extreme. The end of vaping pretty much.

Brilliant. No shortage of fresh fruit and veg out there.

Because Royal Mail won't handle fireworks, they are a restricted item. And to receive them via courier you have to use a specialist one.

This is great news and long overdue. I know vapes were always touted as being "less harmful" than smoking but I think that went out the window with SO MANY different suppliers. F*ck knows what's in them.. But ignoring the suspect "It's not as bad as smoking" angle, the environmental angle is just disgusting and they should have been banned for that alone (Along with coffee capsules).

Banning the flavours is great too. I know people like their flavours but do not try to tell anybody that the bright colours and sweet flavours/names and ACTUAL sweet/candy-flavours are not targeting younger demographics.

So just put them in plain packaging. Do adults need regulation of everything? Its nanny state stuff.

Flavour bans don't work, 6 other countries in the EU have them. It increased the black market trade and sent people back smoking. Estonia brought in a flavour ban and smoking rates increased by nearly 40%

So put proper laws in place to keep them away from children and appealing to children. Most adult vapers use flavours, its counter productive to ban to them.

    This is great news.

I dont think anyone can argue against the ban on disposable vapes

And there shouldn't be an arguement against banning flavours.

If you want nicotine, vape the single flavour. If you want something sweet tasting, buy an icepop

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,325 ✭✭✭✭rob316

Thankfully there is an argument from the people who use the products.

Why stop at vapes, ban alcohol too down to one flavour, there is plenty of colour packaging on beers that could appeal to children. A product that is long proven to damage your health.

The government sat on their hands while even the vape industry called for a no nosense under 18 ban, the government created this epidemic of youth vaping.

If it means, that when I'm on the bus/cinema/function room it means I won't be sitting in a constant cloud of whatever nauseating flavour people have chosen to puff I'm all for it. Most people won't smoke in those places but feel it ok to vape.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,280 ✭✭✭mattser

Ah yes, it's all down to mammy & daddy government. Not a hint of parental responsibility.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,403 ✭✭✭jonski

They should probably ban perfume, cologne, Lynx and probably farting as well .

(oddly enough as a vaper I would never vape in those places or anywhere indoors that wasn't my own house )

I, for one, will miss smelling like the back of a paedophiles van after having a few drinks with my vapist friends.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,774 ✭✭✭uptherebels

Unfortunately your aren't representative of most vapors

Never had someone blow a cloud of artificial bubblegum perfume/colonge over me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 296 ✭✭CuriousCucumber

As someone who used to smoke, I've never liked the idea of vapes. But I think I am very much in the minority, saying that the vape clouds from others never bothered me. Maybe I need to hang around bus stops more often.

Unfortunately, I see vapes as being a gateway for so many kids to get hooked on nicotine.

At least when it was only cigarettes available, the price, taste and smell had deterred most children. It was a dying habit, and one no one could complain about missing.

At least with other addictions such as alcohol, drugs, gambling, etc. there was a high gained from it, and you could understand where the addiction came from.

    With smoking, you gain nothing

Again, as an ex smoker, I know the brainwashing we to do to ourselves to justify why we smoke or vape. I just hope, all of these people who keep telling themselves that they are harmless, and a great way to give up smoking are correct. We wont know for years to come, but as more and more research comes out, it seems like they're really not any better for you than smoking cigarettes. The only benefit, is to your pocket, and stench

As a vaper myself, I've seen how disposable vapes have flooded the market, and it’s definitely concerning. Not only are they a hassle to dispose of properly, but they also contribute to a lot of waste.

Switching back to non-disposable options makes so much sense. I've found that using a refillable vape from dampfi.ch/ not only reduces waste but also saves money in the long run. Plus, there are so many flavor and nicotine options available that you can really customize your experience.

Banning the disposable ones is a no-brainer but not flavors. Adults like sweet/fruit flavors too you know

So any clarification if the 50 cent per ML will be on e-liquids or just disposables?

A 100 ml bottle will go to €70 euros now - that lasts me 2 weeks - Pack of amber leaf is €25 - lasts about 8 days - I`ll be better off back on the smokes!!!!

The government hasnt a clue what they are doing with this tax.

The EU average is 10 cent per ML which isnt so bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,599 ✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

Nothing is clear from the government. Originally, they were banning disposables, but now they are putting a euro onto them - sometime next year. Why put a euro onto something that is about to be banned?
