Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Root canal or extraction, pros and cons?

Default response would be the root canal, to save the original tooth.

However I understand there are cases where the integrity of the tooth isn't sufficient to support a root canal and crown, or would only do so for a short time.

An example being where a tooth has been heavily filled on several surfaces and there's more filling than tooth.

Transferring all the biting load through the post and core means it would likely fail?

    ………

Alternate being an extraction and presumably an implant?

Issue there being often the root might have crossed the sinus nerve and may require a bone graft and sinus lift after (during?) an extraction to make it feasible?

Unsure of the cost, who does it; oral surgeon or implantologist?

    …..

Forgoing the implant may result in dental drift which can result in a misaligned bite?

And subsequent potential additional tooth removal?

    Sounds like a nightmare.

In physics we trust....... (as insanely difficult to decipher as it may be)

While preserving a natural tooth via root canal treatment is ideal when possible, certain conditions may necessitate extraction followed by implant placement. Each option carries its own set of considerations regarding structural integrity, costs involved, potential complications during treatment, and long-term implications for dental health.
